Pursue a career as a fashion designer

One of the most nerve-racking questions children face growing up is – what do you want to become when you grow up? Well mostly children are either unable to answer this question or are very confused between fields, how does one decide what they want to do when they grow up, and is there an age when they are pretty sure about their career aspect? I was a part of one such career counseling session sometime back where a professor from JD Institue was guiding many people like me into what would be good for them.

One piece of advice he gave me has stuck with me ever since, even if you do not know what you want to do, try finding out what you do not want to do, by this, he meant one should be applying for various internships where they learn a lot and come to know their likes and dislikes, it was a good way to figure out what I wanted to do and it helped me.

If one wants to pursue a career as a fashion designer, this article may be it for them as here without wasting any time were quickly going to discuss the aspects one should be aware of before making a decision. I have divided this article into three parts so that students in different phases of life can gain the most from it.

For people in high school

If you’re in high school – it is the best time as other than the school you may sign up for a 6 month fashion design diploma course at JD Institute where you’ll be made aware of the different kinds of fashion designs, interior design elements and will help you know if you have a thing for fashion.

For people in 10+2 or bachelors

If you’re interested in giving fashion a shot after your 10+2 you may do that as well, you shouldn’t be worried because fashion at a bachelor’s level from JD Institute you get a B.Sc degree which is just like any other graduation degree, through this opportunity you can also pursue your dream of studying fashion and also pursue it even further as a fashion designer if you like or may choose something else as your masters as you already have a graduation degree.

For people who are sure about working in the Fashion industry

If you’re reading this it means in your mind you’re pretty sure that you want to become a fashion designer and hence it’s very important to walk you guys through the details –

There are many things you’ll have to learn over the next few years which include –

  1.  Creativity & proactivity

As a fashion designer one constantly needs to be creative to create something different and surprise the people around, they also need to be proactive and do away with the trends that do not intrigue their audience and it is a pervasive job to constantly keep on upgrading themselves.

  1. Good business acumen

Fashion designers not only should be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with their various stakeholders but they also need to have an eye for detail so that they do not miss any detail, it is one of the most important aspects of being a fashion designer.

  1. Drawing, Visualising & sewing skills

A fashion designer needs to visualize their next masterpiece and they should be able to break the shackles of their imagination to dream outside the box and be unique and different, now once a fashion designer has visualized something it is equally important to sketch/ draw it to make it come to life a fashion designer needs to have very good sketching skills as that helps a lot in making the visualization come to life. Next, they also need to have sewing skills as they come in handy when the fashion designer is going to bring the rough sketch to come out to life with all the glamour of the masterpiece can come to a halt if sewing and stitching are not done properly.

  1. In-depth knowledge of fabrics

A fashion designer needs to be aware of different types of fabrics that they can use to make a product as many designs would look good on cotton but wouldn’t look half as good on a leather fabric hence the knowledge of the different kinds of fabrics, their qualities and their uses once instilled in the mind of a fashion designer will help them become a much better designer.

  1. Leadership & organizational skills

It is a well-known fact that most fashion designers after staying under the wing of a renowned fashion brand go out on their own and start their brand, hence they need both organizational and leadership skills as they will be working under some brand at an office their they will be a part of a team and their ability to work as a team and their organizational skills will come in handy, however when it comes to starting a brand of their own they will have to showcase their leadership abilities and how well they can coordinate and manage their team it will affect the overall working of their brand.

  1. Being detail-oriented

A fashion designer as we earlier discussed needs to have an eye for detail, the details in a piece of clothing matter the most, the borders, the print, and the amount of shine the fabric should have are the little things that can make any design better due to the details, hence a fashion designer should always keep them in check.

There are various stages of life at which one can think about pursuing a fashion design course. One may try out other things as well so that they don’t ever feel stuck and know that they chose this field because of their liking and interest in it, some skills a fashion designer must acquire are sewing, visualization, leadership, and team-building qualities. Fashion designers need to know the fabrics along with a business sense to excel; the various skills have been laid out in front of you and it may sound very difficult to acquire them on your own, but don’t worry JD Institute got you covered through their effective way of teaching in all their courses they cover all these skills.
