NEO-FASHION SUBCULTURES – By RIDHIMA

Fashion subcultures seems to be a thing of the past. What we see today are remixes. Subculture in today’s time are mostly seen on social media in the form of Tumblr trends, Instagram hashtags or currently trending Tik Tok. They are short-lived but spreads across the world quickly and adapted instantly. Let us have a look on the latest, lesser-known trends.

1. Cybergoth:

A culture that first appeared in 1990s and hasn’t changed much since then. For a cyber goth look, wear a black goth dress made up of synthetic fabric like PVC, leatherite, etc. and accentuate it with neon accessories like bracelets, necklaces, cyberlocks, goggles, coloured lenses, UV jewellery. Bio hazard symbols and other radioactive elements are pretty common elements in cyber goth trends.

2. Steampunk:

It is a retro-futuristic subgenre that found mainstream popularity in 2005 with the TV show Steampunk’d. It combines Victorian fashion with 19th century sci-fi elements. Outfits are generally accessorised with goggles, parasols, top hats, gloves or any kind of mechanical gadget. Steampunk women are seen wearing long skirt with petticoat, corset (under or over-bust) and some sort of headwear. The entire look is very costu-my and is mostly DIY. You can simply wear black trousers and a dress shirt along with vest and long tail coat and carry a gun that is made now but looks like came from an alternate universe.

3. Memecore:

Memes are not just for trolls, they have made their way to fashion as well. Remember McDonald’s logo on Moschino T-shirt or SpongeBob or smiley logos on the runway. Where there is a name- there is a meme.

4. Normcore :

If you tired of following trends and want to be comfortable, casual and look effortless- normcore is your style. It can include basic items of clothing like mom jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, oxford shirt anything but classic and casual. It is a unisex style.

5. Cyber punk:

It’s a fashion subgenre that shows science fiction in dystopian future setup. It tends to focus on a combination of low-life and high-tech. Functional fabrics, shape shifts, color-changing, etc. are few keys elements of contemporary cyber punk. A lot of the leathers that really fit the Cyberpunk style tend to have futuristic, asymmetrical cuts, muted hardware, and slim fits. Another way to call it is apocalyptic fashion.

6. Hipsters:

Basic attitude of hipsters is – they just don’t care. A typical look of hipster includes skinny jeans, long beard, man buns, flannel lumberjack shirts, vintage band tees, hoodies. Accessories include thick framed glasses or classic wayfarers, messenger bags, scarves. For women it can be anything basic form ripped denim to vintage skirt. Hairstyle is generally natural waves or top knots.

7. VSCO girls:

A teenage girl fashion trend that emerged in the summer of 2019 created abuzz on Tik Tok. The subculture intends the wearer to look more attractive and therefore making teen look attractive for adult. Imagine a teen girl in an oversized hoodie that covers her shorts, wearing tinted lip balm, scrunchie either to tie hair or atleast 2-3 on the wrists or maybe Pura Vida bracelets, a Fjällräven Kånkenbackpack and maybe Birkenstocks or Vans and posing with her hydro flask. So, the minimum budget for a VSCO girl look is approximately 229$. The girls then edit these photos in the VSCO photo-editor app and hence the name. She might look innocent, but every sticker on the hydro flask symbolises her brands.

8. Emo:

Emo is another way of teen lifestyle. Emo people are mostly non-social, restricted to themselves and listen to loud metal music with inaudible guitar rifts and over wrought lyrics. These people are mostly seen in all black skinny look that includes black tight jeans, wool sweater, some ripped effect, scarves maybe, slim fit leather jackets and most importantly straight hair covering atleast one eye if not 3/4th of the face.

The subcultures of today are broader than ever and its very hard to keep up with it. All credit goes to the instant spread of information globally through social media. We definitely miss how 70s glam and 80s rock or 60s punk have created an impact and stayed for over a decade unlike these short-lived fashion subcultures. But looking forward, these subcultures, that are actually remixing of the past, are making a comeback.
