Eligibility for Interior Designing Courses In India

  • Minimum qualification required is 10 + 2, in any discipline in order to join B.Sc. in interior designing or B.designing  graduation courses.
  • The minimum marks required is 50% in class 12th. 
  • The admission process varies for universities and colleges.
  • Apart from academic qualifications, the candidate may have to write some entrance tests to get admission at the state level or National level colleges or universities. 
  • The entrance test is mandatory for a few institutes for graduation courses. 
  • Once the test is conducted, a merit list of finally qualified candidates is announced and applicants are invited for the admission process by the respective institute or college.
  • The final allotment of seats to the candidate is done, the candidates are asked to deposit the fee for the course, and register for the respective academic year for the course they have applied for.
  • If the candidate is looking for a diploma or any professional certificate course or short term course then no entrance exam is required for them. 

Entrances exams such as NATA, AIEED, announce the results to the selected candidates who have performed well in the exam. Students have to get specific scores to get admission into NID, IIFT, etc. along with the 10 + 2 scores. In addition to this course, the candidates must have some other interior design requirements such as: 

The candidate should not have any backlog in any of the subjects/subject in 10 + 2 or equivalent. In case of any backlogs, the candidate has to clear all the subjects before admission. 

The institute or the college has its admission criteria, in their own customized way. So the students have to meet the eligibility criteria in order to get admission into the course. 

Relaxation is 40-45% of marks given for the student who comes under the reservation category, depending on the type of reservation they belong to.

There is some relaxation for the reserved categories. Students have to submit their reservation certificate issued by the authorities to get the benefits applicable, if any; they will be discussed at the time of admission. 

Apart from the above, the students should have:

  • Creative and analytical mindset
  • Interested in design and structurization
  • Looking for a skill-based job
  • Aiming at higher studies in the subject

Eligibility criteria for MBA in interior designing courses and for Masters in interior designing: 

  • There are many courses such as masters in designing and communication, masters in Business Administration and designing, etc. 
  • The candidates interested to pursue their Masters, should have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or college with a minimum of 45%- 50%. The duration of the master’s course would be 2 years. 
  • Admission process in various universities or colleges for diploma, bachelor’s  or masters in interior designing is offered on the basis of merit, i.e, the students must have secured 50% in the 12th board exam or equivalent. 
  • In addition to the eligibility criteria, there might be some entrance exams conducted by the university or college. 

Since the diploma in interior design is an initial level certification, the main target of the course is usually on providing an introductory framework to the elemental principles of the course being undertaken. Knowledge is provided, fundamental concepts and principles of interior design are covered. Those curious about further advancing their knowledge in Interior Design can prefer to enter for an advanced diploma in interior design, which is offered by a few institutes in India.
