What is the difference between Textile Designing and Fashion Designing?

What would you imagine as soon as you hear the word “fashion”. “Fashion” is a word that conjures up such images in the common person, as glamorous fashion shows and fantastic ramp walks and such clothes that blow one’s mind. Yet, most of us only see what is on display and not what goes on behind the scenes. It takes many people and countless hours to put together each fashion show with its glamorous ramp walks. Indeed, each costume requires intense training, and this is not very different from any other profession. If you are not very familiar with the fashion industry, it could seem that fashion is a single stream without any tributaries. However, the fashion industry has many specializations and offers a wide variety of careers to choose from. Of the many careers you could choose in this industry, fashion design and textile design are the most popular careers. A layperson may be confused between the two and may think that both are the same career. However, this is not true at all. Both textile design and fashion design careers have very different roles in the industry. Keep reading on to understand the difference between textile design and fashion design.

What is Fashion Designing?

Fashion designing is the field in the fashion industry that is most popular. Indeed, if you tell most people that you want to pursue a career in the fashion industry, they assume you want to be a fashion designer. This is because fashion designing deals with creating artistic and unique jewellery, garments, footwork and other accessories. The top institutes in India that provide many fashion courses are the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), JD Institute of Fashion Technology, and a few more.

Role of Fashion Designer

The primary task of a fashion designer is to create artistic designs and patterns for garments. As mentioned above, fashion designs also make footwear and other such accessories. Their methodology follows a particular order. They first think of a design for clothing and sketch it out on paper with their desired colours. Then they select fabrics that would be best for the development of the designs onto garments. Finally, they cut the fabric and sewed the garment. It is essential for fashion designers to have a thorough knowledge of the properties of different fabrics, pattern making on garments, garment fittings and different body shapes. Fashion designers then create a collection of garments for retailers for every new season. It is also up to the fashion designers to source the fabrics and other accessories they would require to create their garments. When needed, fashion designers sometimes take the help of textile designers for the fabric designs that they had imagined for the garments.

Role of Textile Designer

The main task of a textile designer is to create patterns and designs on fabric and develop various fabric structures. A textile designer aims to produce material and various embellishments on fabrics. Being a textile designer, you would have to select yarns, the colour of the yarns and dyes to make fabrics of different textures and give each fabric a unique look and feel. Like fashion designers, textile designers have to source their raw material and provide instructions for the knitters and weavers about making a fabric they have designed. They also select prints that would go on each fabric. Textile designers also have to consider such factors as how environmentally friendly and cost-effective the fabrics are. Textile designers are the ones who develop the raw material for fashion designers.
