Why is Interior design believed to be both an art and a science-related subject

Interior designing is one of the most exciting professions involving blending art and aesthetics with technical study and psychology. The art of interior designing is focused on aesthetics, and the overall design and ambience of the room created. The method is equivalent to art, and every design has its uniqueness which makes them beautiful. Digital art and illustration, creativity, colours, patterns and texture determination, aesthetic decoration and furnishing all fall under the art category of interior designing, even though the art and science of interior designing are overlapped in many cases.

The science aspect of interior design comes in the form of structural elements in interior designing, CAD and basic computer skills, math concepts and technical structures and most importantly- psychology. The technical and structural aspects

in interior designing are of the areas, sizes and shapes of the room and furniture. Proper knowledge of these concepts helps you understand the harshness or softness of the room’s aesthetics and has a lot of importance in determining the functionality of specific furnishings or decors in the room. Digital art is a mixture of art and science, which takes a lot of computer and gadget knowledge and basic computer knowledge to understand and create computer-aided designs for blueprints and idea presentations. The art counterpart, in this case, comes in the form of visualisation and creativity that leads to illustration and digital artwork of structure, area, textures, colours, fixtures and furnishing ideas for the room. Psychology, a recognised discipline of Science, is related to interior designing. Environmental psychology is a branch of psychology that is proven to have firm connections to interior designing during various tests and after several types of research. The essential point of environmental psychology is that a man’s behavioural pattern and mental health are majorly bound to the environment of the room or place he spends the most time or most of his significant or memorable moments in. In this case, it is objectively true to say that the rooms in a person’s home are where they spend a lot of time and have the most attachment to.

Certain factors in a room, like harsh glares of light, improper usage of space, too dark or too brightly coloured rooms, uncomfortable pattern and textures of fabrics like curtains or rugs in the room, too much clustering of home decors or too empty spaces can all cause the person- to lose sleep, poor mental health, headaches, irritable mood, mood swings, feelings of ether being too lonely in big empty spaces or feeling claustrophobic amongst too much cluster.

On the other hand, soft adequate colours with cold or warm undertones, proper usage of the space to find just the right amount of furniture in measured shapes and sizes, correct textures and patterns, proper lighting fixtures and such can create a homely and lovely ambience that affects a person’s mood in the best ways and improves their mental health.
