What are the Common Mistakes You Should Avoid When Designing Your Interior?

Interior designing is all about studying the little details that make a living space perfect and that’s what an interior designer does. Interior designers spend their whole lives studying little details to make a room perfect for the respective individual. Just like a beautifully directed and scripted movie catches the eye of a viewer, in the same way, a well-decorated living room is considered to be impressive. Professional interior designers are meant to catch what is going wrong in space but being a common human, you often miss out to pinpoint your own mistakes. Therefore, to give you a perspective and shed some light on the common mistakes most people do while interior designing, we at JD Institute write this to you and share some useful tips along with it for aspiring interior designers.

Common mistakes you should avoid when designing your interior:

  •  Choosing the wrong sofa: A professional interior designer always agrees that a great living room starts with a great sofa. People often end up choosing the wrong sofa for their own space. People already want to work with the sofa they have been using for years without even giving it a makeover. In any living space, a good sofa is a key to comfort, but it’s also the central attraction of every eye when someone enters your room. Make sure to pay attention right from the sofa quality to the sofa seat height. This makes a big difference when you are newly interior designing your house.
  • Falling into the showroom look: Another mistake that you could make while designing your living rooms is giving it an overall showroom feel. In simpler words, it is a room that looks like it’s been copy-pasted from a store. It’s very important to experiment and mix new and vintage elements of designing to create interesting rooms. Never fall prey to the most common showroom feel interior designing decor. To be honest, there is nothing unique about it anyway.
  • Buying a rug that’s too small: One of the bad decisions while decorating your living room is purchasing a poorly sized rug. Nowadays, people think small rugs do justice to the interiors of their house but in reality, huge rugs can do wonders. They might be expensive but they are one of the most important aspects of a living room. Living rooms should always have huge rugs that fit well in the space.
  • Poorly planned design layout: Though many people consider the traditional style of putting out things in a living room it is suggested that you consider having a different kind of design layout in your living space. You have to think through in and out to give the perfect feel of your planned layout.
  • Hanging Art Incorrectly: If art is poorly hung in a living space it pathetically resembles a character wearing an insane wig in a movie. Placing art on the wrong wall or in the wrong direction just ruins the feel of the space. It gives out a very wrong and distracting experience to the ones getting to see it daily. Therefore, it is advised to never go wrong with the choices of placing your arts in a living room. It is often advised to have art placed at the eye level if your ceilings are tall.
  • Using way too precious accessories: Though now the days are long gone when you used to have unused living rooms but we still suggest you do not have accessories that don’t fit the conveniences of your daily living. Never go extravagant with the type of accessories you use while decorating your place. Be minimal and creative altogether.
  • Not testing your living room arrangement: It’s very important to consider the arrangement of your living room while decorating it with various elements. For example, in a large open room it’s very nice to place the seating arrangement in a place that gives out the view of the rest of the room or in a small room it’s often advised to consider the window view while placing the seating arrangement. Think and plan your living room seating arrangement accordingly.
  • Not mixing periods and styles: People often end up feeling confused about how to go about choosing the furniture and architecture of the home. We advise you to mix and match your furniture styles with the architectural style of your home. Experiment with different kinds of styles that complement each other well. For example, contemporary furniture with traditional designs and contemporary art gave out an exclusive interior designing style choice. Therefore, it is advisable to go for mixing different periods and styles while decorating your living space.
  • Forgetting to Measure: This is one of the most important aspects while designing the interiors of your living room. You should always be aware of the different measurements of your living room. It includes measurements right from what size of sofa would fit into the living room to what dimensions of a side table would compliment the sofa. Each measurement carries its value and you should always have it known before purchasing any of the decorating elements for your living space.
  • Sticking With Obvious Fabrics: People often end up making mistakes while choosing the fabric for their living space. Always consider decorating your living space with fabrics that compliment your living routine. A silk rug would be a bad choice if you have dogs and kids at your home. In the same way, you have to take care of every little detail before actually investing in a particular fabric.
