VERTICAL GARDEN FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

With the advent of modernization and urbanization, people are shifting from rural to urban areas, thereby urban population is increasing day by day resulting in congested cities and towns. Throughout the years, replacement of vegetated surfaces with paved and impervious surfaces in the urban areas have increased the temperature as compared to rural areas. Urban landscaping is gaining popularity nowadays as people are becoming more conscious about green and clean environment. Design, construction and maintenance of buildings have a major impact on environment. The important issues in building include increasing the comfort, health and safety of people residing or working in that building. In 21st century people are slowly beginning to realize the necessity of green architecture where new aspects are and technologies are coming up in terms of green building.

Vertical garden is also popularly known as Green wall, Living wall or Bio walls. A green wall is a wall, either free standing or part of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation. The design of vertical garden depends on the available material, space and local preferences as well as on the creativity and imagination of the users. Walls, murals and exterior walls of houses are also often used as a vertical gardening alternative either just as beautification of the wall or to grow vegetables and other crops along the wall. Vertical gardens also have a positive effect on the building climate.

Benefits of Green wall are plenty. To name a few- Green wall is often used to give an aesthetic value of the urban area and the plants in this wall provide shade to the building which helps in controlling the rate of global warming. It has been proven that visual and physical contacts with plants can result in direct health benefits. The vertical garden helps in reducing the risk of cancer, stroke, depression, heart and respiratory element. It also helps in growing more plants within limited space, in saving water, hiding less attractive portion in landscape and provide excellent air circulation.

 Vertical garden has great scopes for applicationswithin the city and have significantly positive environment effect. Spaces that are conditioned by cultural and natural systems directly connect are well-being. It means that spread of vertical gardens in urban areas is an indication of the concern of man about is ecology, as well as high quality of the cultural landscape with ethos and traditions.
