The different colors of gold

Gold, one of the most expensive and luxurious elements present on earth, is something that every person yearns to possess, not only has gold acted as a way to up the jewellery game but it has also for so many years been pegged with the value of our currency – the rupee. It is the gold reserves of our nation that make us such a powerful nation on the way to becoming a developed nation, so why not learn something more about this precious metal.

Well as the saying goes, “All that glitters is not gold”, it turns out that it is and our favorite metal is also present in different colors, with the help of the kind people at JD Institute we have curated a list about the different kinds of gold right here for you, Lets quickly delve into the different kinds of gold –

  1. Yellow Gold –

When we talk about gold, the picture that comes to your mind, yes that is what we call yellow gold as yellow is its natural color. It is a bright shade of yellow which is achieved when mixed with silver copper and zinc. The different metals are added to it so that it retains its shine and at the same time becomes stronger so that it can be used as jewellery design course. It requires the least maintenance as it has become less reactive after the mixing of different elements which made it stable. It is the most preferred color of gold worldwide.

  1. White Gold –

While Gold is naturally yellow, due to the preference of people it is often paired up with either silver or platinum to produce something that’s much more expensive than white, however, if someone wants the white color but isn’t looking to spend so much gold mixed with nickel, zinc, and cadmium will do the trick.

The quality of white gold is that it’s much more durable and scratch-resistant than the yellow gold, it is also a bit cheaper than the yellow gold if mixed with nickel, zinc, and cadmium, hence people often buy gold in its white form as well.

  1. Rose Gold –

Gold, when it has a pinkish hue, is known as rose gold, this color became very popular with the iPhones being launched in this color for many years and people know and like this color very much. It is made by mixing copper and gold, as it uses copper which is a lot cheaper than gold it brings down the cost drastically, and rose gold is much more affordable than yellow gold also the copper content present in it makes it much more durable than the yellow and white counterparts.

  1. Green Gold –

As most would think, no it’s not green it’s more of a greenish-yellow than a straight green-gold color. It is Electrum which is a naturally occurring alloy of silver and gold which is often referred to as green gold. The silver present in it is what gives its color, though sometimes copper is added to it as well. Sometimes Cadmium is also added however most people do not prefer it as Cadmium is toxic to one’s health.

  1. Grey Gold –

Grey gold is often seen as an alternative to white gold this is because they both are kind of alike but since grey gold is made up of gold and palladium it is a much cheaper substance than white gold made up of platinum. Some forms of grey gold even use iron to bring down the cost drastically, however, mostly we can see gold being mixed with silver, manganese, and copper to obtain grey gold.

  1. Blue Gold –

Now, most would think that I’m making this up, but no Blue gold is relatively new and a fairly recent phenomenon that has yet to catch up, and hence most people do not know about it currently. Real blue gold is an alloy that is made up of gold and either gallium or indium. However this mixture is not as pure as one would like it to be, it sits at around 11k purity and hence is inexpensive but this also makes it fairly durable as well.

  1. Purple Gold –

It is an alloy made of two metals gold and aluminum, it is very rarely used for jewellery because adding aluminum to gold makes it brittle and a blow/impact can cause the metal to shatter into pieces making it unwanted by almost everyone. It is also known as amethyst gold and sometimes violet gold.

  1. Black Gold –

Black gold can be made in 3 different ways – Oxidation, chemical vapor deposition, and patination. These three are very complex processes and all are branched under one method – plating.

Hence, black gold does not exist as it is not a real substance and is a made-up one unlike its peers, however, one may plate their gold for the aesthetic purpose if they like and after some time maybe a year or so the plating will wear off and one will end up with probably a white gold ornament.

As one can see there are around 8 different kinds of gold accessible to them, however, one may face a dilemma in choosing gold, here is a little FAQ for your rescue.
