Never Make These 7 Interior Designing Mistakes!

If you are continually inspired to transform the space we live in and use it to create a more aesthetic and healthy form of living, you are on the right path! Interior designing makes life beautiful by changing a dull and lacklustre home or office. It is one of the most popular upcoming fields that are changing how we live. JD Institute is one of the best designing institutes in India and offers several unique courses, and BSc Interior Design is one of them. Choosing an interior design course is a smart career move. Off-late, the growing need for luxurious and comfortable living spaces has led to increasing demand for interior designers, as people desire and want to add aesthetics grown tremendously. Moreover, in this field, you will never be bored of your work since every project is a challenge where you will have to use a unique set of your creativity to add personality to the home.

If “Do what you love, and love what you do” is your mantra, then you are perfect for this course! That being said, being an interior designer does come with its challenges. You need to have a flair for design and an eye for detail. Some mistakes in home decor are unknowingly made by the best of us. The objective is to keep learning and improving the skills until you achieve perfection! You should keep an eye out for the following blunders that might make all your hard work go down the drain.

  • Mistake #1: Bad Lighting

Good lighting transforms a place, creates depth and height, and draws attention to your most impressive areas. Even the most stunning sites look a bit scary under fluorescent overheads. Don’t be afraid to use both natural and artificial light sources when designing a space. You will never regret the money you invest in the bulbs that give off the most flattering light.

  • Mistake #2: Hanging Art Too High

This is one of the most common mistakes seen in people’s homes. Because we want art to feel more “important” and catch the eye of visitors when they enter right away, we tend to hang it a little too high than needed. But actually, swinging it at eye level is best for optimum viewing. The following trick would help to avoid this kind of mistake. The centre of your art piece should be 57″ from the floor. This standard represents the average human eye height and is commonly used as a standard in many galleries and museums. This also creates balance in the home because all of your art will share a visual midline.

  • Mistake #3: Using Full-Length Curtains That Are Too Short

This is one mistake that is simply overlooking things but can transform the look of your space. Always remember that the length of your curtains needs to be, at the least, the distance between your floor and the curtain rod. It would help to think of full-length curtains as you would pants – they should break at the ankle! If your curtains are flooding, make sure your full-length drapes break and rest slightly on the floor, even if it’s just an inch. For a more elegant, formal look, they can even form a little puddle on the floor which adds an element of interest.

  • Mistake #4: Not Having Enough Negative Space

There is a rule for furniture; just because it will fit doesn’t mean you need to buy it! Always consider protecting a sufficient amount of negative space in a room, which gives a more balanced look. Try to work smartly with the area you get, such that it doesn’t feel too crowded. If you’re decorating apartments and smaller spaces, then settees and under-scaled sofas often look best!

  • Mistake #5: Hanging Curtains Too Low

Don’t be afraid to hang the curtains high as it creates the illusion of a taller window, higher ceilings and allows the fabric to turn gracefully. It adds a bit of elegance and drama to the room. The general rule is to mount the rod anywhere between halfway to two thirds between the top of the window frame and the ceiling.

  • Mistake #6: Awkwardly Sized Rugs

All four-legged piece of furniture should be able to fit on the rug beneath it, with sufficient breathing room on all sides. This is the general rule for any designer just starting. But there are also flawlessly designed spaces that break this rule! If you feel too daring, you could place only the front legs of the furniture on the rug, or placing no legs sometimes work too! This is when you only need to add a pop of pattern to the room and could get away with a small rug. So ultimately, it depends on your discretion, but the size and placement of the floor rug could change the look of your living space altogether.

  • Mistake #7: Decorating From the Details Up

Although attention to every minute detail is significant in interior design, starting with a rough idea and then building towards the details helps pace the process and eliminates mistakes. It helps establish the scale and creates a strong foundation of balance between the architecture and the furniture. When decorating a room, remember to show an excellent, functional arrangement of furniture before details like colour and theme. So before you start building that incredibly complex and beautiful piece of furniture, think about the room as a whole.I hope you loved these insightful tips by JD Institute!
