MANY YARNS OF THE COTTON HANDLOOM INDUSTRY

A visit was conducted at India International Center for an exhibition titled “Many Yarns of The Cotton Handloom Story” on 1st September, 2018. The exhibition was curated by Dastkar, Andhra. Jediiians from Fashion Design Department visited and explored the methodology of constructing handloom fabrics on various Handlooms.

The exhibition was designed as an interactive experience where the visitors could touch and feel the fabrics/ yarns, smell the colors of dyes and listen to the sounds of weaving. The process was explained with display of original samples and audio recordings of the dyeing and weaving process.

The equipments used in hand spinning and hand-weaving of cotton fabrics, were demonstrated to enrich the knowledge of students towards handloom constructions.

Over 500 indigenous varieties of cotton are grown in India. It was enlightening to understand about the spinning and weaving of these qualities. Jediiians learned about adapting modern techniques like digital printing on 100% cotton handloom fabrics to make the fabrics more contemporary.

JD Institute constantly endeavors to provide such experiences to our students so that they focus on building strong aesthetic designs with an awareness of our rich handmade crafts. This visit enlightened our students to design with a perspective of uplifting the Indian handloom weavers in various regions of our country.
