GAT – General Aptitude Test


With multiple inter-state travel restrictions put in place, the first cycle also had online GAT applicants while the second cycle was entirely on a digital platform. The task created for these candidates had the same assessment guidelines however the activity was re-structured, making it a better fit for the online format. Candidates were asked to create mood boards for given themes and explained how they interpreted the topic through picture representations. This helped the panel to understand each candidate’s perspective. The personal interview was also part of the online assessment plan which was conducted individually over a zoom call.

We are very happy to announce that two cycles of GAT have already taken place, one at the Hauz Khas campus and the other entirely on an online platform. General aptitude test was drafted by the department to help the institution and students alike understand their existing creative skills. The candidate’s ability was assessed through different testing formats giving maximum priority to how each task was approached. It was more qualitative, allowing candidates to put their problem-solving and creative thinking skills to use. Our aspiring designers/candidates knew that GAT was not to test the technicalities that they may or may not know about design, it was to see what design means to them and how they would approach a task.

Looking at how these candidates had performed, our jury panel was quite ecstatic to see the zeal and dedication this new generation had to offer.

The assessment happened in two parts. Firstly, the candidates had to appear for a situation test. The fashion department wanted to see how candidates worked with fabrics of different textures and prints through draping.

The interior department devised a challenge around the concept of balance. Each individual was provided with newspaper, aluminum wire, and jute threads. The task was to make a furniture prototype that would stand using all the given materials. We believe each candidate had a very distinct approach to both these activities. To help our department know more about each candidate, the second process of personal interviews was put in place. It was more of an interactive format where our jury gave feedback regarding their drapes and prototypes but also tried to understand their future aspirations and how they wish to use their time at Jd institute to achieve that Goal.
