INDUSTRY VISIT TO BIR HORIZONS- A KNITTED FABRIC PROCESSING UNIT & SWASTIK COMPUTERISED EMBROIDERY UNIT

Understanding of ways to add value to garments is very important for fashion design students.

Computerized embroidery is one of the most widely used techniques to add beautiful designs on the fabric surface with precision and consistency. JD institute of Fashion Technology endeavors to give practical knowledge to students so that they learn by experience. A visit was organized for the fashion design students to Swastik Computerised embroidery unit for the same purpose.

Students got a chance to interact with the designer to understand how designs are made for doing computerized embroidery. They learnt the nuances of the process and limitations in terms of the size and number of colors in an embroidery pattern.

Students saw how panels were set for embroidery and how the designs fed into the machines. It was a great opportunity for them to get a better understanding of the entire embroidery process. JD Institute of Fashion Technology organizes such activities for students so that they become industry ready and more suited for jobs in designing, merchandising and production.

Students of Fashion Business Management went on to visit Bir Horizons, which is a fabric manufacturing and processing unit. They saw how single jersey fabric is knitted on a circular machine and the subsequent dyeing, printing and processing of the fabric.

Students understood the technicalities of fabric quality. Experienced technicians showed the various tools and machines used for testing of fabrics and explained about the required parameters set by the buyer. Students learnt about color fastness, tensile strength, crocking, gsm, spirality etc.

It was an eye-opener for the students to see the scale of production with huge dyeing vessels with 1000- 1500 kg capacity. They also saw the lab where recipes for dyeing were being set. They learnt about compacting and finishing of the dyed fabrics. They also saw rotary machines and digital printing machines for printing of fabric. Then the students went to the showroom to see different types of knitted fabrics like jersey, ribs, slubs, fleece, pique, waffle and many more.
