In a Contactless World Fashion is Resurfacing

Fashion is fundamentally social; it is not only a means of self-expression, but we also use clothes to communicate information about ourselves to others. Their theory is that the virtual world is both a source of content and a medium for content creation – if our selves are still inextricably linked to the virtual space, then cyber fashion is yet another manifestation of that. They do it by breaking down fashion’s barriers: no gender, no age, no shipping, and no waste.

Even if it’s one of the last sectors to truly adopt the virtual, this mode of fashion has steadily gained momentum over the years, with tides beginning to turn only after a global pandemic. Carlings, a Scandinavian retailer, was one of the first to jump into the virtual fashion pool in 2018, unveiling the “Neo-Ex” line, which was completely digital. The Neo-Ex line, which Tribute Brand influenced, had a similar feel to the clothing of the label: A futuristic video game character crosses paths with an Instagram influencer and a streetwear aficionado.

As a result, virtual fashion allows one to try something new (looking like a floor-length bubble coat) without sticking to it. Digital fashion’s ability which stretches to streetwear; a piece of “digital couture” by digital fashion house The Fabricant was auctioned for $9500 last year. The technology is also highlighting several smaller designers, such as the Hanifa fashion show, which was widely celebrated in May. Overall, this is a fast-growing segment of the industry with the ability to “sell one-quarter of the apparel market share at $25 billion.”

After all, one of the best things about fashion is feeling like the clothes are yours, so cyber fashion is unlikely to totally change the way we engage with it. However, it represents a promising new area of development for the fashion industry, demonstrating that we are aware of some of the detrimental effects of our fast-paced, trend-obsessed culture.
