Interior designing refers to the art or science of improving a building’s interior to make it pleasing for the people who use it in an aesthetic manner. An interior designer is a professional who plans, coordinates, researches, and manages such improvements.
The profession of interior design arose from the progress of civilization and the sophisticated architecture that has come from the growth of industrial processes.
The modern interior design profession has benefited from the quest for optimal space utilisation, user comfort, and practical design. Interior design differs from the job of interior decorator, which is widely used in the United States; the phrase is less widely used in the United Kingdom, where the profession of interior design is still uncontrolled and hence not yet recognised as a profession.
When we think of family-friendly interior design, the first thing that springs to mind is less-than-beautiful “temporary” furniture, soft-edged things, and bright, over-the-top colours. That said, JD Institute Of Fashion Technology (which has a 32-year history in fields related to art and creativity) is here to challenge that vision right now, and we couldn’t be happier about it. You’ll want to keep scrolling if you like chic, adult-appropriate interiors but also have a family with kids to consider. In three simple steps, you can create a stunning space that is also family-friendly:
If there’s one thing my toddler has taught me, it’s that anything within reach of her chubby, adorable, and frequently sticky fingers are fair game. While stylized flower arrangements, table books for coffee, and pretty much any other decorative objects that are present on the tables will be gone in the future years, there will still be plenty of ways to add design. Excellent lighting and great art are two of my favourite locations to advise clients to invest, no matter what budget we’re working with, for two reasons:
For starters, lighting (which can be seen as a sculpture and thus truly an art form) is frequently a point of focus in any room. The light emitted by a fixture also significantly impacts the atmosphere and mood of a space. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, these items are out of reach and never see any wear and tear, making this an excellent place to splurge.
Art is always a great place to put your money. Aside from the obvious benefits (for example, the fact that the correct pieces may gain in value), I like to remind my customers that art is something that can last a lifetime. They can bring with them wherever they go. Contrary to major pieces of furniture or case goods that are location particular, art is easy to move about as your family grows and evolves. Your collection is also a terrific way to express yourself, and it’s the perfect area to inject some colour and personality. Regardless of your budget (large, little, or huge), choose products that speak to you and provide you joy; you will never feel the buyer’s regret if you follow this simple guideline.
Nothing puts a damper on a design show like a stubborn stain. Textiles have come a long way, and there are now a plethora of indestructible fabric options. Upholstering indoor furniture with outdoor fabric is one of our favourite tricks. You may be concerned that the fabric on your family room sectional will feel like sandpaper, but these fabrics have come such a long way that you’d never guess they weren’t standard indoor fabrics (there are even outdoor velvets!). Hot Tip: Restoration Hardware, for example, can upholster all of their indoor sofas in their outdoor line, Perennials, if requested. Outdoor rugs are also available in a variety of soft and luxurious styles to complement any décor scheme. If they can withstand the elements and clean in an aggressive manner, then they can surely withstand crawling kids, husbands, muddy paws, and the like!
Millwork that is in-built can be included to as much extent as your budget allows if you’re building or renovating. Your design requirements in each room of the house will require time and thought so make sure you choose the right ones. While it may be tedious, we have our clients go through key areas such as mudrooms or kitchens during the design phase and list what they will store in each drawer. There’s a place for everything, so there’s less clutter! If adding millwork isn’t an option, consider creative ways to store toys, shoes, and other small items while maintaining a pleasing aesthetic. “The details are not the details,” Charles Eames once said. They are in charge of the design.” It couldn’t be more accurate.
