Garment Pattern Making Process and Steps

A pattern maker’s importance and significance in the fashion industry cannot be overstated. A pattern maker may transform a fashion designer’s idea or imagination into something real. Anyone who designs garment patterns based on ideas/sketches given by Fashion Designers/Design Teams’ ideas/sketches is known as a pattern maker. The pattern makers practice, perf, and knowledge of a design decide its long-term viability. As we all know, Fabric is the most important component of a dress, accounting for roughly half of the overall cost. As a result, if an effective pattern maker can save 1% on fabric costs, the average profit margin would increase. As a result, we can quickly see how important a pattern maker is in the apparel industry in terms of profit margins. As a result, garment industry owners emphasise forming an active pattern design team to reduce production costs.

A Pattern Maker Working Procedure is Mentioned Below:

A) Examine the Worksheet

1) For a better understanding, all of the packages/programs must be thoroughly reviewed point by point. For this task, the pattern maker should collaborate with the concerned merchandiser regularly.

2) Request that the merchandiser include all relevant details or a copy of the product manual for you to study.

3) It’s important to double-check that all of the shipments are fully comprehended. It would be preferable if you could get a comparison sample from the buyer’s end to check.

4) Before beginning the pattern, you must know the sample production schedule and dispatch time.

5) If you have any doubts or questions, you can address them before creating a pattern.

(B) Basic Pattern

1) To avoid a fit issue, check previous seasons or the buyer’s note block.

2) Calculate the block and write the measurement next to the new style measurement board.

3) Block should be meticulously rectified in preparation for a new style.

4) For sewing, use a loose measurement and refer to a previous similar style.

5) Take the concept line from the label sample or diagram into consideration.

6) If possible, copy the pattern construction from the previous style

7) To create a new style pattern, label and pin a sample.

8) Update comments should be applied to prevent any incomplete or incorrect information.

C) Design Pattern

1) Before designing a new style, the pattern maker must have a thorough understanding of the construction.

2) Must comprehend the significance of notches, as well as interior and exterior design details.

3) Need to know how to calculate seam allowances based on machine and product construction.

4) Include fabrication as specified in the BOM, and compare sketch data.

5) Create a lining pattern based on the theme of the shell pattern.

6) Double-check the entire style pattern once it’s completed, including the join seam, fabrication, notches, internals, seam allowance, and all sections.

7) If necessary, the pattern maker can mock-up key points to match the sample and consult with senior designers.

8) When creating a washing style pattern, the pattern maker must account for fabric shrinkage and take special precautions to avoid measuring errors.

(D) Making Markers

1) Create a proper model with all of the required patterns and fabrication.

2) Check fabrication with fabric form, and all pattern parts are present before starting the marker, pattern, and marker man to avoid any missing or mistakes.

3) The fabric width details should be collected by the marker man.

(E) Sewing Pattern

1) Carefully research the buyer’s spec sheet, draw details, and adhere to all of their sewing pattern guidelines.

2) You must print out all necessary patterns and be ready to sew.

3) The whole finish pattern should be a plot finish pattern, not an allowance finish pattern.

4) Seniors can double-check all key positions.

A pattern creator must also maintain the following responsibilities:

As we all know, if a pattern maker makes an error, the garments business will suffer a significant loss. As a result, garment owners should place a premium on the pattern section and provide a motivating work environment. It’s human nature for people to pay more attention to their responsibilities when they have more.

1) To be enthusiastic about pattern production daily, with no compromise on product consistency of measurement.

2) Must find a fast solution to any pattern-related problems that occur during bulk processing and determine root causes to eliminate hassles and take prompt corrective action.
