Fashion Stylist vs. Designer-Are they the same?

If you have a passion for fashion, and an eye for creativity, then entering the fashion industry is a good option for you. JD Institute of Fashion Technology invites you to our numerous fashion designing and fashion styling programs that will help you hone your craft and work on your talent.

Now that you are considering going ahead with it, how do you decide what you want to become? Is a fashion stylist the same as a fashion designer? Let’s find out.

A lot of people seem to confuse fashion designing and fashion styling because of their seemingly similar names, however, these are two entirely different jobs that share some basic fundamentals.

Who is a Fashion Stylist

A fashion stylist is someone who puts together different pieces of clothing and accessories to create specific looks as per the customer’s requirement. You can hire yourself a personal stylist who can help you look your best every day. Celebrities have personal stylists who help them look their best, be it for conferences and promotional shoots or even just for a normal day out where the paparazzi will snap them.

A fashion stylist does not design clothes but uses them to their full potential. They will know what kind of clothes will suit your body type and what things are trending in order to help you look the best version of yourself.

A fashion stylist is hired by people to help design their wardrobe and style particular pieces. Fashion styling is all about crafting looks. Celebrities hire them so that they can look their best. Fashion stylists also are responsible for determining what the trends will be for the next season. If someone popular is seen wearing a certain kind of clothing and it starts trending, just know that a fashion stylist was behind all of it.

Who is a Fashion Designer?

This one is easier to talk about as we have all heard of them. A fashion designer is responsible for designing and creating clothes from scratch. They spend a lot of time creating the perfect kind of clothes. They have to be involved in the process from brainstorming the ideas to putting them on paper to finally getting it made and seen on the runway and/or stores.

JD Institute boasts of having renowned names in the field of fashion designing like Falguni and Shane, Rocky S, and Reza as the institute’s alumni.

What are the skills required for each of these?

Fundamentally, you need to have a good eye for fashion and creativity. Just the way a fashion designer should be able to know what kind of fabric and color blend in together, a stylist should also be able to mix and match various fabrics, colors, and pieces together so that they are able to come up with a coherent look.

Other common skills required include good intrapersonal communication skills and the ability to handle groups of people. You both need to be well-read about the trends and fashion that are being talked about at the moment.

If we talk about specific skill sets, then they are as follows.

Fashion Designer –

As a fashion designer, you need to be artistic and creative. You should be able to work under extreme pressure and tight deadlines. You should be ready to have your designs get rejected even if you feel like they were some of your best. There is no schedule for creativity – you never know when you will get bouts of inspiration. So a fashion designer’s job is something that carries on throughout the day, and you can never leave it behind.

Another important thing is that you should be talented. Without a starting point, you won’t be able to move forward efficiently. You have to be able to work hard until you can perfect the pieces because it is a very precise profession.

Fashion Stylist –

As a fashion stylist, you should be knowledgeable about the latest fashion trends. You will have to intensively study the kinds of trends and styles that are in and out of season at any given point.

Since you will be working one-on-one with your clients, you need to have good communication skills. You should be able to convince the clients that what you are choosing is good for them.

You have to have innovative ideas and the ability to appease clients of all kinds.

One added benefit of a fashion stylist is that you can work as a freelancer who can divide your time among multiple clients. You will have erratic work hours but ultimately you are your own boss. This is an easier job in this aspect, however, when you are working you will have to keep working until your client is happy with your choices. So you should also always have an array of topics.

How to become a fashion designer and a fashion stylist?

In order to pursue either of these careers, you need to have a degree in fashion design. If you want to be a fashion designer, you will need to gain some experience that you can do by doing some internships with fashion houses. You should also have a portfolio ready as you go.

For a fashion stylist, you will need to make a mark and have people vouch for you in this industry. Client referrals and a portfolio are important. To be able to achieve this you must first start by acquiring the relevant knowledge of this field.
