Career Path for Non-Celebrities Personal Styling

While I was younger and unsure about what career I wanted to pursue as an adult, I figured becoming a personal shopper would be fantastic. I’m not sure how I figured out that was a task — and I definitely had no idea what it entailed — but I loved shopping, so being paid to do it was a fantasy come true!

I recently found that, as an adult with a very different style of fashion occupation, I don’t know any more about becoming or being than I did with a personal shopper or stylist when I was younger. It’s not a high-profile occupation like celebrity red-carpet style, and it’s not something you can learn in school. As a result, I wanted to hear more about the people who get to make shopping a part of their career.

Of course, it’s far more than that, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to starting a company. To find out what it takes to get people to hire you to create their wardrobes, we talked with many women.- One who focuses on the contemporary market, one who deals primarily with Nordstrom, one who dresses actors and does costume design in addition to personal fashion, and one who’s building a squad of stylists to work around the world.

There is a tremendous demand for personal stylists

While many of us in the fashion industry may enjoy shopping and getting ready every day and so do not see the appeal of letting anyone else do it for us, many others do not and also want to look good and be on-trend. Andrea Lublin, a Los Angeles-based stylist and writer who has found a niche for working mothers like herself, says, “There’s not a lot of me.” She says, “This party has some money to spare.” “Women in the 30-50 age group are feeling good and want to look good; they want to look polished and put together.”

In addition to costume designing, celebrity modeling, and designing a clothesline called Le Cloud with customer Amy Schumer, Leesa Evans does personal styling for individuals in various industries, from Hollywood executives to entrepreneurs. “It’s people who, for whatever reason, don’t find dressing and getting ready every day simple, and they’re only looking for a lot of comfort in their lives,” she says of her clients. “I always think that my greatest dream is that one day someone won’t need me because they figured out how to do things on their own, but even though they do, the convenience of personal shopping is too enticing to start doing it again.”

And for those who aren’t interested in working for themselves, there is an increasing need for personal stylists at both digital-native outlets like Stitch Fix and Trunk Club (which also has in-person options) and traditional stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. (Almost every department store offers some kind of personal styling.) Alternatively, You could collaborate with Bree Jacoby, for one, who is a talented young woman. Building a membership-based personal grooming business with a growing team of stylists and a backend website for personal shoppers.

Starting Elsewhere in Retail or Fashion Might Help

Evans got into personal fashion from her experience as a wardrobe designer (she’s worked on films like “Zoolander 2” etc.), where she was asked to model celebrities and executives for their everyday lives. She believes that her background and her love of art qualified her for this role. “I come from a modeling family, which helped, but I’ve always been a painter,” she says, “and so much of art, architecture, nature, and fashion is built on proportions.” “That’s something I’ve really noticed.”

Jacoby worked with James Perse and Alice & Olivia in the supermarket industry. She then Previously, I worked as a stylist for Trunk Club. She was setting out on her own after taking a break from modeling.

It All Revolves Around the Word of Mouth

Any of the stylists we talked with mentioned that word-of-mouth is their primary source of potential customers, though anyone may sometimes find them on Instagram. Evans says, “I’ve never wanted to get a new customer.”

Instagram, like many other modeling professions, will serve as a kind of resumé. “I have my Instagram and my blog,” Lublin says, “and those are perfect points of reference.” “You can get a good sense of who I am from reading this. It’s my resume, it’s exactly my aesthetic, and the price points are clearly visible.”

It isn’t Fun or Glamorous All the Time

“There’s a lot of grunt work,” according to Jacoby. “Building your own company can be intimidating and isolating. That would be almost unlikely if you aren’t really self-motivated.”

“It’s a lot of effort,” Lublin agrees. “When they say fashion is a pain, they mean it.” Carrying garment bags and returning anything the clients don’t purchase are two of the job’s less appealing responsibilities. It’s also difficult to find the right pieces for your customer, particularly because the traditional fitting isn’t built to suit every body type exactly, and personal stylists dress a far wider variety of sizes or shapes than celebrity stylists.

“I can see how it could be seen as ideal for someone who enjoys shopping,” Evans says, “but the truth is, you’re really searching for a needle in a haystack — there’s only a limited and precise form that genuinely evokes a feeling of trust and health in every individual person.”
