BAMBOO IN INTERIOR DESIGN

Bamboo is an ancient species of grass found in abundance all over the world. Over the years it has emerged as a favorite material for designers in the field of Interiors as well as Fashion. Bamboo has been used throughout the history not only because of its strength but also because of its renewable prospects.

The major bamboo research as a sustainable product began around 1920. As the demand for this material has increased, more and more Bamboo products suitable for the building Industry is available in the market now. This innovation is the result of many designers researching to make bamboo a healthier substitute material the Building Industry. Still a lot needs to be done to make this material more commercially viable and to be used by the masses.

The main properties which make Bamboo win over other building materials are –

  • It is a light weight material and very convenient to handle.
  • It is extremely durable and strong – its tensile strength/ unit weight is greater than that of steel. Bamboos can easily be the alternate material to be implemented as a structural system in the construction industry.
  • It is more resistant to wear and clings than hardwood
  • It is naturally resistant to moisture, therefore less prone to warp, stain, or cup
  • It is available in a variety of finishes & easy to maintain
  • Offers natural beauty of hardwood
  • Sustainability – grows at a fast rate so easy to replenish, prevents soil erosion. A full grown tree can take up to 60 years to grow, whereas species of bamboo equal to the size of a tree takes as little as 60 days to mature completely.
  • Green – Its footprints are green. Bamboo takes in more co2 and produces more O2 than an average tree.

Though still in its nascent stage, the material has found many innovative uses in Interiors and Architecture field.
