As a kid I would use my mother’s sari, cut them up and drape my dolls, playing a designer. Nothing makes you happier than seeing your dreams taking shape. In 2018, I modeled for a friend’s makeup course at JD Institute. After a year I enrolled in JD as a fashion design student. 2019 has been a year of beautiful memories and fruitful experiences. I went to France to visit the Louvre museum and Eiffel tower followed by London to pursue a styling course. Thanks to JD, I fulfilled all my dreams of pursuing fashion designing learning great skills through amazing experiences offered for students. I enjoyed my study tour (fun galore too) and a degree in media styling from the University of Arts, London. They say experiences are what make you! It certainly adds layers to one’s personality. While in London, I enjoyed visiting the “Victoria and Albert Museum” and the “Design Museum”. That experience showed me that design is everywhere and in everything; designing clothes is just one aspect. During the pandemic, inspired by Rina Dhaka’s session, I tried to make the best of the situation by hand stitching numerous linen and cotton masks for family and friends. I also made the most of the opportunities offered to me by JD for backstage internships and styling. These two events were the calendar shoot for 2021 with the country’s top models and clothes by top designers and the “London India Fashion week”. Both of these gave me an opportunity to closely handle and observe the workings behind the scene as well as the construction and surfacing did on all the ensembles. I feel blessed and grateful for 2020 and my college for always driving me to create and learn! I am looking forward to the complete my Diploma use my skills to make my mentors. Well, I have definitely come a long way from dressing Dolls to designing and creating for actual people!

Importance of Pattern Making in Garment Manufacturing

Friday, March 12th, 2021

A pattern is a design or a template from which a part of the garment is traced onto the fabric before it is being cut out and assembled. Patterns are usually made of paper. Pattern making in garment manufacturing is a highly skilled technique that calls for great technical abilities. It also requires a basic sensitivity to interpret a design with an understanding of garment construction.

Pattern making is one of the fundamental steps for successful dress design. This function of pattern making connects various designs to production by producing paper templates for all components like cloth, hemming, fusible etc. This has to be cut for completing a specific garment. There are three methods of pattern making.

Methods of pattern making:

  • Drafting: Drafting is a very basic two-dimensional method of preparing a paper pattern. The pattern is mostly prepared on brown paper using personal measurements of the wearer. The garment prepared by the method of drafting fits exactly right in accordance with the satisfaction of the wearer. It is highly economical and smart to draft one’s own pattern. Also, one can make changes in the style easily by adopting the basic pattern. This type of pattern can be easily constructed by either drafting manually or producing it by a computer which has been programmed to construct these basic patterns according to the given measurements of the wearer.
  • Draping: Draping is the method that involves a detailed survey and study of the wearer’s measurements in order to create a reliable fitting experience for the wearer. Originally, draping was called modeling. Draping was considered to be the original method of constructing garment patterns and wasl widely used while designing clothes.
  • Commercial Patterns: Commercial patterns provide fashion in current trends that are designed to fit certain sizes. It is mostly available in tissue papers. These patterns are mostly used to indicate neck sizes for garments such as shirts or chest or bust measurements for children and women or waist, hip and length measurements for pants and skirts. If someone has the desire to design their own clothing then commercial patterns are a good starting point.

Uses of Paper Patterns:

  • Paper patterns are very useful for not only beginners but also for experts as there is no risk involved of the material being wrongly cut.
  • It is essentially very useful to the beginner as it is one of the best methods of learning than cutting the material directly.
  • Paper patterns are time and labor-saving as they can be preserved and used whenever required.
  • One can easily make adjustments in paper patterns in order to ensure a perfect fitting.
  • One can easily bring changes in the design if they are using the basic paper pattern while garment manufacturing.
  • The use of paper patterns will ensure one cuts a garment with a minimum amount of fabric.

Contents of Paper Patterns:

  • Margin: Extra safety margins are cut beyond the actual cutting line to allow for stitching changes. Upholstery pieces, such as sofa slipcovers, usually have margins.
  • Cutting Line: This is the actual line of cutting on which garments are cut.
  • Stitching Line: The stitching line is clearly seen on the paper pattern, allowing the person doing the stitching on the fabric to easily identify where the actual stitching needs to be done.
  • Fold Line: Fold line on the pattern has to be clearly indicated to mark it as a fold line when there are two sides to a pattern such as the back & front sides.
  • Grainline: Every pattern piece has an arrow that indicates the grainline. This is drawn to identify whether the fabric has to be cut straight or cross-grain. Collars, cuffs, or other trimmings are cut on a cross-grain in order to give a better finish to the garment.
  • Construction Details: Tucks, buttonholes, darts, center front, center back, buttons, pocket markings, style features of the garment, all are shown on the paper patterns.
  • If one requires graceful curves and shapes on the paper pattern, it is clearly indicated there as well.
  • In patterns, the particular pattern size of the front, back, collar, sleeve, cuff, etc are shown.
  • If it is necessary the pattern can also suggest and explain the steps in preparing the garment like stitching, marking, and cutting of the garment. This is generally done in a commercial pattern in order to ensure the correct use of the pattern.

Why is Pattern Making Important in Garment Manufacturing?

In the garment industry, patterns are used in order to cut the fabric pieces and to make the garment. Patterns are essentially made so that the same style can be easily duplicated when it is needed and multiple pieces can be efficiently made. Pattern making ensures that you don’t have to start from scratch while duplicating the patterns. Nowadays, with the technical advancement pattern making can be easily done by using various computer software.

By using these patterns, garment construction can be easily done. As we talk about fashion designing, the first thing that comes to our mind is either apparel or garments. Therefore, garment construction is the core of fashion designing. It involves all kinds of processes like understating machines, seam types, and stitching of the garment. In garment manufacturing, the skills of pattern making and garment construction are essential as these are the core areas of garment manufacturing. It is very important to understand the garment from all aspects in order to perform pattern making.

In the current scenario, pattern making is also being taken as a professional course in Fashion Designing. So what are you waiting for? 5 Steps of Pattern Making Technique

Thursday, March 11th, 2021

Pattern making refers to the art of manipulating a design on a piece of fabric so that a person’s figure is incorporated. The ultimate goal of pattern making is to attain a customized or perfect fit. Pattern-making technology creates a two- dimensional with regards to the garment which is being designed. For the entire garment, pattern making is the foundation as it guides where the fabric should be cut so that it conforms to the figure of the customer.

JD Institute is here with a step-by-step process of the technique of pattern making. There are various types of pattern making in clothing or pattern making processes such as block pattern printing and computer pattern printing but the most common method among them is flat pattern making which can be obtained in five easy steps:

Gather Your Tools

In any pattern maker’s arsenal, there are some select tools that you will find. However, with time, pattern makers have included different tools in the drafting process:

  • Pencils and Erasers: While drafting a pattern the first two things that you will need are a pencil and erasers. You might find yourself referring to your original designs at the time of drafting for the first time. This being the reason, even experienced pattern makers avoid using pen or markers
  • Patterning Paper: Patterning paper is graded paper which is different from ordinary sketching paper. The paper is graded or marked so that length, inches, or sizes are revealed. It helps the designers to save time.
  • Flexible Rulers: Flexible rulers reflect more versatility than straight rulers as they can be bent in different shapes or various angles so that contours can be measured. An ideal flexible ruler is around 65 inches or longer.
  • Hip and Arm Styling Curve: Hip and arm styling curve refers to a rigid and curved ruler which is designed to trace out or measure curves and angles after the pattern has been sketched out with straight lines for increased definition
  • Two Straight, Clear, and Gridded Rulers: These rulers come in handy in the situation where length, width, or height on your designs are measured. Mostly two of them are required, one whose length is around 6-8 inches while the other should be around 13-15 inches long. For precise measurements, the shorter scale is appropriate however while measuring larger dimensions, a larger-scale comes in handy.

Careful Body Measurements

Patterns are either designed according to specific requirements or in standard sizes. Accurate measurements are required by the pattern makers or designers to get the perfect fit. In flat pattern making, body measurement required are: height, waist, bust, waist, arm, rise, in-seam

Adding Styles and Designs

The original pattern draft is created parallel to the body measurement or style of the customer. Including various styles in your design will make it unique or different from the generic designs making it a fashion statement. For example- flared sleeves etc. these styles are included on top of the original sketch by the pattern designers. However, the fit of the garment and how flattering it looks should be taken into consideration

Grading Your Design

Basic paper patterns are readjusted into different sizes using the same pattern by a process known as grading. In customer markets or emergency situations in which sizes have to be readjusted quickly, paper grading acts as the most efficient method by minimizing or maximizing one drafted template. Patterning papers are often graded. You can just as easily trace the original design on another piece of patterning paper for adjusting the dimensions of the original design for other sizes

Moving on to Draping

After the pattern is drafted on a piece of paper, two-dimensional images should be converted into a three-dimensional one so that final changes can be made and to have an estimate as to how it will look on a body as compared to a flat surface. This is the situation when draping comes into play.

After the pattern has been made it should be traced out on a piece of fabric and should be attached with the help of needles. Draping reflects the styling of a customer with the cut-out fabric based on the drafted design.

A pattern maker will have to follow these five simple steps to create a simple pattern. Pattern making has numerous benefits such as time-efficiency, customization, and reusability. For fast fashion markets and customized designs, patterns prove to be very useful. Irrespective of the fact if you are a mass-market clothing industry or self-employed seamstress, pattern making should be incorporated to start your success.

Different Approaches of Pattern Making in the Garment Sector

Thursday, March 11th, 2021

Patterns refer to the art with regards to design patterns through making templates from which clothing or items of craft can be seen. People who are indulged in pattern making are also known as technical designers. When the work of a fashion designer ends, technical designers start their work of designing patterns for the garment. Usually, patterns are made out of cardboard or paper templates which have become a skilled process with time or over centuries. JD Institute is here with all you need to know about the environment of pattern making.

Types of pattern making in clothing

The pattern acts as a guide to cut the fabric which can later be sewn together to form a garment. Various types of pattern making in the clothing industry or in the pattern making process are:

  • Block or sloper pattern making

This method reflects no seam allowance and a basic pattern of the garment through which other patterns of similar design are made due to which it is also known as foundation pattern. It is based on either custom or standard measurement

Flat Pattern Technique – To draw a draft on paper, this technique uses a variety of straight edges, curves, calculations, and measurements. It reflects a two-dimensional method that manipulates an existing foundation block pattern. Making patterns with the flat pattern technique is easy as the patterns are based on the template. The hard part in the process is when the templates have to be made either manually or by using a software of pattern making.

Modelling –  It is often known as draping on the stand is a method of pattern cutting in which muslin cloth is used for fitting of block garment usually on a dummy of appropriate size. Until the designers are satisfied with the shape and fitness, they manipulate, mark, or adjust the three-dimensional mock-up. Draping is often used in high-class fashion as it gives a clear of the product to the designers.

Computerized Pattern Making

A technology that has integrated into each aspect of our work lives is computer technology. The first appearance for CAM/CAD was in the 1970s. Computers have become economical with time however grading software or pattern-making technology still remains an expensive investment to make. One of the easiest and most advanced design techniques to use is the flat pattern technique using CAD. to create patterns designers use a lot of geometric designs that are based on a variety of shapes and lines. Changes or corrections can be easily made on the screen if necessary to get ready for further operations like marker making or grading.

Pattern Making Process

A design is interpreted by the pattern maker by drafting it through different pieces of pattern according to the body measurement. This process is known as pattern drafting. Body measurements of individuals are converted into a series of straight lines and curves on template paper. In later stages of the process, these lines or curves determine the overall section of the pattern pieces to cut and ultimately develop a reusable pattern and test for fit. Pattern making consists of three steps which are fashion analysis, spec sheet design, and drafting of the pattern.

Importance of Pattern Making

As in pattern making, a sketch is converted into a garment and it forms a link between design and production. To complete the process of garment pattern making, there are three major elements which are:

  • Technology: For an efficient garment production, dependence on technological facts which are interpreted into pattern making is there
  • Interpretation: The ability of reading and understanding the design or sketches and its objective or technological challenges can be resolved by a technician but until the design goal is achieved, none of it is complete
  • Technique: while making different designs or to achieve their result, the pattern maker should possess a variety of tools

Pattern making aids in getting a clear idea of the right style or accurate measurement for the garments. A perfect pattern helps in making an appropriate sample or reflects clear information when it comes to sewing allowance, construction, grainline, fabric cutting, etc, and eliminates any wastage of fabric. In cases where there is production for bulk order, the resources required for the construction of a particular style can be eliminated by the factory. To help the buyer in receiving a trouble-free shipment accurate interpretation along with proper technology and technique should be used. No matter how the technology is being used, manual pattern-making still remains the mother of pattern-making software as without it nobody can produce a pattern that will fit without alterations into a particular size.

Difference Between Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui

Wednesday, March 10th, 2021

Vastu shastra and feng shui are much talked about topics, however many people get confused between the two which leads to a situation where they cannot reap the benefits of either of them. They both share some principles but are different from each other. In Vastu Shastra, Vastu means dwelling while shastra means science, on the other hand,  in feng shui, Feng means air while Shui means water. JD Institute Of Fashion technology is here with the difference between both the terms but first, let’s discuss the commonalities between the two:

Origin: Vastu shastra is around a thousand years older than feng shui and principles of feng shui are originated from Vastu shastra

Basis: Practices of both Vastu shastra and feng shui are based upon the powerful cosmic energies. One of the major elements between the two is that each practice is backed by mathematical calculations.

Do’s and Don’ts: Both Vastu shastra and feng shui believe in providing remedies with regards to placing objects and tools to improve energies in an environment. Both the practices clearly forbid cluttering around

Chi and Prana: Feng Shui’s philosophy is created around the flow of energy known as chi in the Chinese culture while Hindu culture calls it prana for Vastu shastra

Energy Fields: Center of the home is where all the energies combine making it the most significant part of the home is what both the practices believe in. Eight compass directions are used to determine placement or architecture in both practices.

Difference between Vastu shastra and feng shui

Basis of Principles: while feng shui is based upon geographical considerations, Vastu shastra on the other hand is based upon science.

Way of Life vs Architecture: Vastu shastra is more about planning a home according to the guidelines given under it while feng shui promotes a positive method of life. South reflects auspiciousness in feng shui as it takes advantage of the fact that the sun moves from east to west.

Auspicious Direction: According to Feng Shui, the south is regarded as auspicious as it takes benefit of the fact that the sun moves from the east to west, and Vastu Shastra, on the other hand, considers north as auspicious as it is the source of magnetic energy

Colours: Vastu shastra reflects that the wall should be painted in bright colors while Feng Shui on the other hand Feng Shui reflects that a home should be bathed in soothing colors such as cream, beige etc

Objects Used: Another difference is in the objects used in both theories. While Feng Shui makes use of wind chimes, laughing buddha, and bamboos, Vastu shastra on the other hand emphasizes placing Ganesha idols or use tulsi plants.

North-East Issue: according to both theories, the north-east is considered as a zone that is supposed to rule the mind. While Vastu shastra emphasize putting water in these directions, Feng Shui emphasizes putting earthen things here as it believes it is governed by the earth element.

Application of Both the Theories at Home

  • Centre of the Home

Vastu Shastra for Home: Center of the home should receive the highest amount of quality of energy due to which open spaces or courtyards should be there

Feng Shui: The centre of the home is known as the heart of the house in Feng Shui due to which this space should be kept clean along with happy energies

  • Entrance of the Home

Vastu Shastra Tips: as north and east are considered being the auspicious direction, experts says that the front door should be placed in these directions

Feng Shui: According to Feng Shui, the most ideal direction for entrance is south

  • Kitchen

Vastu Shastra for Home: kitchen should not be located above or below the bathroom, pooja room, or bedroom while south-east direction should be planned for the kitchen and bright colors should be used

Feng Shui: according to Feng Shui, the kitchen should be placed right in front of the entrance of the house and warm colors should be used

  • Bedroom

Vastu Shastra Tips: the master bedroom especially should be made in the south-west corner of the house. Southeast should be avoided as it attracts quarrels or misunderstanding between couples

Feng Shui:  according to feng shui, the color of the bedroom and position is emphasized, pearly white or dark chocolate brown should be preferred and the bed should be placed diagonally from the door

Now that you are clear with the distinction between both the terms, you can deduce which one to use for your home as you will know what to keep in mind. JD Institute personally recommends Vastu shastra as most of the designers and architects use these principles.
