On October 21st, the Interior Design students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology embarked on a meaningful visit to Osaanj Designer Home Solutions, a renowned facility specialising in tile and stone finishing. This visit was designed to immerse students in the material science of interior design, particularly in the specialised world of tile and stone applications. The experience aimed to broaden their understanding of materials frequently used in flooring and wall cladding, including ceramics, terrazzo, sandstone, and various tile finishes.
The students’ journey began with an exploration of a broad range of designer wall and floor tiles, each representing unique materials and finishing techniques. They encountered ceramic, vitrified, and stone tiles, experiencing the diverse aesthetic and functional qualities each offers. Osaanj’s facility showcases an extensive selection of tiles, including handmade ceramics, mosaics, borders, and stone surfaces, all crafted with specialised techniques. Each tile exemplified advanced processes like digital painting, screen printing, laser cutting, and sandblasting, demonstrating how intricate finishing adds character to a space.
What particularly captured the students’ interest was the dedication and expertise required to produce designer tiles. Techniques such as hand painting, screen printing, and foil patterning were revealed to be labour-intensive yet crucial to the appeal and durability of the tiles. These methods not only add artistic appeal but also enhance the surface’s functionality. Through the guided visit, the students observed how these finishing touches influence the final look and feel of tiles, expanding their appreciation of the nuanced work that modern tile design entails.
The visit provided students with a unique opportunity to see Osaanj’s production processes firsthand. At the production unit, located within Osaanj Designer Home Solutions at H-25, Udyog Vihar, New Delhi, students explored different steps involved in tile finishing, from preparation to final touches. Basic tiles are sourced from Gujarat and undergo a detailed refining process that includes painting, printing, baking, cutting, and intricate handwork. Observing these stages gave students a clearer understanding of the journey from raw material to polished, market-ready product.
This high-quality production method at Osaanj reflects their commitment to producing designer surfaces that meet industry standards. The in-house approach to every finishing stage allows for optimal quality control, ensuring that each product meets the company’s premium standards. Osaanj’s offerings also extend to customised solutions, accommodating unique requirements from designers and homeowners alike, under the leadership of Mr. Nayan Khemani.
A notable aspect of the tour was the practical experience students gained in surface finishing. The students learnt methods like screen printing, hand painting, and foil application. This interactive workshop provided an opportunity for students to practise the abilities they had watched, aiding their understanding of the necessary knowledge and precision in tile finishing. This practical experience connected theoretical knowledge with practical usage, fostering a deeper respect for the craft among the students.
The visit to Osaanj Designer Home Solutions was not only informative but also highly inspiring for the students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology. This immersive experience offered them a unique opportunity to connect with the design industry, understand the processes behind premium materials, and witness the innovation in tile and stone production. Led by Mr. Khemani and the Osaanj team, the tour was both an engaging and enlightening experience, providing students with industry insights and invaluable knowledge applicable to their future careers.
We extend a sincere thanks to Osaanj Designer Home Solutions for their hospitality and the invaluable learning experience. The students left with a deeper understanding of material sciences in interior design, enriched by the detailed craftsmanship that elevates tile and stone surfaces from mere building materials to essential elements of beautiful and functional spaces.
