The Process of Fashion Designing

What is fashion designing? 

Fashion design is a type of art that focuses on the production of clothing and other accessories for everyday life. Haute couture and ready-to-wear are the two basic types of modern fashion design. The haute couture collection is tailored to a select group of customers and is sized to suit them perfectly. A designer must be a member of the Syndical Chamber for Haute Couture and display a new collection twice a year, showing a minimum of 35 different outfits each time to qualify as an haute couture studio.

Ready-to-wear collections are more suited for large manufacturing runs because they are standard sized rather than custom made. They’re also divided into two groups: designer/creator collections and confection collections. This method varies depending on the designer, however, most brands follow a similar pattern.

Typically, a designer will release clothes as part of a series that includes various outfits or items with a similar theme or feel. As a result, the first step in making a collection is to decide on the mood or imagery that will guide the entire collection. A designer can draw inspiration from a specific location, fabric, building, piece of music, or anything else and then create the feeling using an imagery board or mood board. Designers must also conduct research to determine the colours, fabrics, patterns, and fits that will be common in the coming season.

The themes that each mood board is aiming for are clearly visible. The next move will be to start designing the clothes themselves. Many designers prefer to work with sketches or computer-aided design (CAD) programmes, but others prefer to shape and drape various fabrics on dress forms. This is also contingent on the type of apparel the designer is attempting to design. Designers can make a large number of drawings and prototypes before narrowing them down to the best.

The sketches are then transformed into “flats,” which are two-dimensional drawings of the garments that demonstrate all of the stitching and how the pattern should be cut. These are very scientific, detailed drawings with measuring measurements to produce the garments exactly as they are designed.

The manufacturer will be looking for suitable fabrics and materials to use for the garments being manufactured simultaneously as the design process is taking place. This isn’t an easy task, either, since most of the time, the fabric must be produced in large quantities to meet the designer’s requirements. Different fabrics are appropriate for various circumstances. Heavy fabrics, such as tweed or wool, are best for nice pants and skirts, while light fabrics, such as silk or batiste, are better for blouses and shirts.

When the designers need a particular colour, the fabric must be dyed in a facility by a company such as Pantone.

The apparel is then made specifically for the fashion show. A lookbook with the entire collection’s worth of sketches, flats, videos, and fabric swatches is often produced for mid to high-end designers. This booklet will be distributed to retailers and customers at the fashion show, especially at higher-end shows, to buy specific garments after the show. When a business does not want to produce a garment, and no one can purchase it, this is what happens.
