Many of us have a lot of spare time right now, and tackling some home organizing tasks is a perfect way to fill it without looking at a computer.
We’ve become quite the makeup organization experts as a result of our uncontrollable beauty product obsession (after many trips to The Container Store, that is). If organising your vanity or medicine cabinet is on your to-do list, keep reading for seven storage tips for makeup brushes, blushes, lipsticks, nail polish tubes, and more.
To keep your makeup out of direct sunlight and away from life’s unavoidable messes, keep it in drawers. This will keep your counter space clear and your favourite products safe. You’ll feel instantly more organized once you’ve freed yourself from surface clutter, and you won’t have to worry about knocking your favourite eyeshadow palette off the counter and watching it crumble into a million tiny pieces. We’ve been there and screamed over it, haven’t we?
Starting by sorting everything into two piles: a save pile and a toss pile, there’s no point in arranging expired makeup. It’s also pointless to keep makeup you’ll never use. It goes into the toss pile if you can’t recall the last time you used it. Empty items can be recycled to reduce clutter and benefit the environment by reducing beauty waste.
You can sort the save pile into as many categories as you like. We recommend categorizing objects by their intended use, such as eye, face, and lip products. You can be as precise as you want with your groupings, but this is the most straightforward way to begin.
Each product category should have its compartment, so choose trays and boxes that stack and fit together easily. Bonus points if the containers are transparent, as this will make it much easier to locate items from your favourite brands. Any home improvement or beauty supplies shop will have clear plastic organizers that will do the trick. Mark your trays and dividers if you like the look of wood or lacquered plastic containers. This way, you’ll know exactly what’s inside each one.
Sort the containers according to how much they are used. Don’t stack your tray on top if you don’t use eyeshadow every day. Remove the products you use every day from the top tray and transform them into an “everyday cosmetics” container. You’ll have convenient access to your lipstick, concealer, mascara, and other essentials in this manner. Make the same effort when it comes to the makeup brushes you use daily.
Although we enjoy staring into a sea of lipsticks just as much as the next individual, it can be difficult to find a particular shade. What’s our recommendation? To read the colour name on the bottom of the bottle, store lipstick upside down.
Powders, shadows, and compacts all function in the same way. Store them right side up if the top is clear; if not, turn them over to see the sticker. To avoid searching for the shade you want, don’t stack individual items on top of each other.
Sorting makeup brushes by style is the easiest way to keep them organized. Brushes are classified into two types: face brushes and eye brushes. You won’t lose your eyeliner brush among the bristles of your soft powder brushes if you keep them apart. To keep your brushes in good shape, store them upright in jars or a special brush holder.
Go through and clean out expired cosmetics and makeup you haven’t used since your last organizing spree every six months or so. At least once a month, go through your trays and return any misplaced items to their proper home to keep your Marie Kondo-worthy collection in top shape.
