A spicy workshop for Jediiians as Button Masala comes to inspire creativity

If you change the way you look at things then the things you look at change (Wayne Dyer)

Students from across the eight centres of Delhi, NCR, had an enriching experience on 22nd December 2018 at JD Institute of Fashion Technology, HKV, as they played with fabrics to create quirky drapes. The workshop was conducted by Mr Anuj Sharma of Button Masala fame. The idea was to develop, inspire and open the imagination of our students by changing their perceptions.

Jediiians were gobsmacked with the idea of creating garments without using needle or thread. Instead, Mr Anuj Sharma taught them to make garments by simply using buttons or mirrors with rubber bands. It’s a revolutionary technique that has found a niche clientele due to its ease of creation, maintenance, sustainability and multi-functionality.

The workshop began with the inspiring story of Mr. Anuj Sharma where he explained how he developed the brand Button Masala. It had all started when he spotted a man whose shirt was asymmetrically buttoned and that’s when the idea of how a raw cloth and buttons can make a dress wearable in different forms dawned on him. He developed his idea, tried various possibilities of using buttons and buttonholes in fabric straps. Soon more and more ideas were flowing, and he started developing and expanding from clothes to accessories to art and furniture”. His collection was showcased at LAKME FASHION WEEK and received rave reviews on his work and innovation.

The entire workshop was a fun, interactive session, laced with oodles of humor. Mr. Anuj Sharma explained to the students why it is important for Indians to adopt more drapes in our everyday clothing due to our hot, humid climate. He encouraged students to think freely and unconventionally. The session also covered the live making of clothes, accessories among students where Mr. Anuj personally supervised each student and gave them his suggestions. Jediiians braced themselves with raw fabric, buttons, sequins, rubber bands and other resources required to make drapes and came up with some out-of-the-box creations. It was heartening to see their happiness as they discovered new possibilities.

JD  Institute of Fashion Technology encourages these kinds of workshops to help students think with ingenuity. We believe, the more the students interact with industry experts, trendsetters and other unconventional entrepreneurs, it helps them to ponder on their imagination. These kinds of workshops also help students not just with their thinking process but also to incorporate change where they innovate things which are environmentally friendly, durable and highly sustainable.
