Step 1: Compile information

Collect the information you need before you start writing your resume. When you have all the details in mind it is much easier to write, edit or format a document. Make a list of contact information that you need, education, training, certification or skills, etc.

Step 2: Write Your Resume

Once you have completed the first step, it should be listed in the proper order i.e heading of the resume (which should include your full name, address, city, email id etc), profile, a summary of the qualifications, experience, education, certification, award and accomplishments, skills and personal interests. Don’t focus on the fonts or formatting yet. Once you see the full picture of your candidacy it will be much easier to edit. You can also refer to resume writing examples to get a better hold of it.

Step 3: Choose a Layout for Your Resume

There are three basic types of layout that can be used for your resume which will depend on your credentials or employment history.

  • Chronological: this is one of the most frequently used layouts in which you start writing your work history by writing your most recent job first.
  • Combination: this layout of your resume reflects both your chronological work history and skills
  • Functional: it focuses on your experiences and skills, if you reflect a spotty work history, this is the layout you should go for.

Step 4: Format the Text of Your Resume

At the time of deciding fonts for your resume, always remember simple is the best. As everything comes with the exception, in this if you are applying for a design-related job etc your format or resume can reflect design skills.

Choose a Font: basic fonts like Calibri, Times new roman, Arial etc is a good choice for your resume as it should be easy to read for the manager. Consistency is another major key that you need to reflect in your resume. Make sure you use the same font throughout your resume

Font Size and Type: the size or style of the font can vary. For example a larger font can be used for the headings or name while italics or bold can be used as a method of highlighting details of your employment history or education etc

Lists vs Paragraphs: a bullet list in the job description makes it much easier to read when compared to paragraphs while each sentence should reflect a brief synopsis of the strongest achievements in the position you were in.

Step 5: Save the Document

At the time of saving select a file name that reflects your name in it for example- markapplicantresume.doc it will also be an easier task for the manager to track your application materials. Make sure you save it in various formats so that you can cater to the specific needs of the employer,

Step 6: Proofread and Print the Final Version

It’s crucial to proofread your resume once you finalize it. Take a printout to ensure the printed pages line up to what is there on the computer. Once that step is done, take some extra copies so that you can take them at the time of the interview.
