5 Tips For Attractive Interior Designing For Your Home

After a tiresome day, there’s just one thought in everyone’s mind. Going home and getting comfortable. Well for almost all of us, home is that special place where you are yourself. Maybe that’s the reason you would want to decorate and design your home in a way it expresses yourself and your taste. While hiring someone professional for home interior design could be one way. There are a few interior designing tips that you can follow to make your home a beautiful place without burning a hole in your pocket.

It can be a fun project that you can do with your partner or kids. Even if you are someone who is creative and looking to work on a project first hand, home interior designing is the perfect place to start. First things first, interior design is blending architecture design with space design. The main goal is to make the settings look trendy, spacious, and inviting. Interior design for homes is divided according to the spaces we habituate:

  • Living Room
  • Bed Rooms
  • Kitchen
  • Bathrooms
  • Outdoors
  • Lighting

It’s important to note that whatever space you are designing should be aesthetically pleasing but more than that it should be fully functional and lively. So, we need to keep in mind the first and foremost reason for that space (for ex: a bedroom’s main purpose is a good night’s sleep, so the design should revolve around that)

Let’s jump straight into some creative tips and hacks for home interior designing.

Identify and Understand the Style You are Going For:

As we said, interiors are all about expressing yourself. What is your style? What is the story you want your space to speak? Do you prefer western settings or rustic Indian settings? Do you like colors or more of whites and grays people? Take a look around. You can also do a simple exercise – what are the words that come to your mind when you think of the vision of your home. Minimal? Traditional? Modern? Elegant? Playful? Humorous? Once, you do this, you will have a central theme and style you want your spaces to look like. For inspiration on these styles, search the internet and browse through home design magazines. Recall any hotels or resorts that you have stayed in.

Similarly, list out what you don’t like and what aspects of home interiors are you most unsatisfied with? By listing dislikes too, you can eliminate styles in the beginning and arrive at a much more clear understanding of the theme that you want to work with. Remember, while your designing, furniture, and furnishings may differ from different spaces but what ties all of them together is your style. So as much research and clarity on style, as prepared are you for taking the next steps of your house interior designing project.

Take Care of The Principle of Balance and Form:

For designing spaces, the biggest challenge as well as the biggest strength when used properly is BALANCE. Balance means the individual elements that are used in the design should all tie together in a neat balanced way that the whole look better than the parts. It can get a little overwhelming here, so let’s take a step back and first understand different types of balance in interior designing.

Radial: Arranging furniture (either inward or outward) taking a central focal point. Like arranging chairs around a table or keeping the furniture facing TV etc.

Symmetrical: If a particular space(or room) is to be divided into half, one side’s design matching another side is called symmetrical balance. So placing two plants on either side of a couch or two lamps  on either side of a bookshelf etc

Asymmetrical: Placing different objects on either side of a central axis while still balancing and distributing weight across the space/room.

You can pick any of the above and start working on your design. Form means how individual objects (furniture or elements) relate to other elements of the room. For example, pairing a large couch with a geometrical pattern and plain minimal rug that accentuates tones down the couch versus pairing a couch with small patterns with a center table that accentuates it.

Choosing Color Schemes and Patterns:

Now comes the interesting part. Color plays a major role in how your space is put together. You will have more flexibility if you are starting from scratch but if you are working with parts of what you already have (example, furniture) you can still try to match them by changing the colors of your walls and cupboards, etc. Once you visualize a color scheme, there are multiple ways you can imbibe colors and patterns to your decor. For example, using wallpapers for your walls or painting one side of a wall a contrasting color compared to the others. There are options to change the colors and patterns and texture of your countertops, tabletops, and wall tiles by using vinyl stickers. You can also try using chalk paints to color your cabinets (if it fits into your theme). Your old furniture can get a new look with new upholstery. Use wall decorations if you are planning with plain white walls. Get creative, play with colors and patterns on all the elements of the space you are designing.

Decorate with Plants:

You can do magic by adding green buddies to your living spaces. Plants are a great way to stand out and they make your home feel a little more breathable in such times too. Choose large plants to decorate free spaces. Bonus points, the material that you choose for your planters could be a total style statement too. Add a few plants to your hallway or living room. If you have small spaces, try using small succulents to adorn your furniture or bookshelves. They don’t cost you too much and they really add a sense of serenity too. While the vote is always having real plants, if you are someone who cannot maintain them or you’re away most of the time for work, you can just simply consider dressing up your walls with artificial plant decorations. Mind you, if you choose to go that way, it’s really important to choose quality ones that don’t look tacky.

Play with Lighting:

Lightings adds that oomph to your spaces. Depending on the area of the home that you are decorating, you can choose the lighting. For hallways and living rooms with extra space, floor lamps or a single floor lamp in a corner adds style. For living rooms, replacing your regular ceiling lamps with a trendy chandelier adds a majestic feel. For bedrooms, a minimal night lamp can add beauty to your nightstand. For balconies, hanging lights or light shades can be pretty expressive.

Choose the right material that accentuates the furniture in the room for your lamps and lighting. If you are using elaborate designs for furniture, go with simple lamps. If your furniture is plain, use showy lighting.
