Not on a screen or a sketchpad, but in spaces where textures, colours, and materials come together in countless possibilities and this is where JD Institute students began their learning, right at the source. Students from Fashion Designing course visited Ahuja Vastra Bhandar, one-stop-shop for all fashion fabrics, for a focused session on fabric sourcing. Known for its wide range of textiles, the visit offered students a real-time understanding of how materials are selected, evaluated, and translated into design.
One of the key learnings during the visit was the journey from fibre to fabric, a concept often studied in theory but rarely experienced in such a direct way.

As students explored different materials, they began identifying:
This understanding allowed them to connect the science of textiles with the creativity of design.
Walking through the store, students were exposed to a wide variety of fabrics, each with its own characteristics and applications. The experience was not just about observation, but about making informed choices.

They engaged with:
This gave them a clearer picture of how designers operate within real market conditions.
Interaction with vendors played a key role in making the visit more dynamic and insightful. Students gained exposure to the practical side of sourcing, which often goes beyond textbooks.

They discussed:
This helped bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry realities.
By the end of the visit, students developed a more practical and confident approach towards material selection.
They gained:
This experience reinforced that, Design does not begin with a sketch, it begins with the right fabric.
At JD Institute, students are introduced to design not just as a creative process, but as a series of real-world decisions. By placing them in sourcing environments, they begin to understand that every design choice is influenced by availability, practicality, and purpose.
The right design starts with choosing the right fabric.
