How Do You Take Fashion Photo Shoots?

Fashion photography is everywhere and it is one of the most profitable and exciting areas of photography. Whether it’s Paris, London, New York, India or anywhere in the world, fashion magazines and fashion houses are looking for experienced fashion photographers.

As exciting as it seems, fashion photography is a lot of hard work too. From garments and makeup artists to models and mood boards, it’s really challenging to put everything together in one place to get that perfect shot. This work demands knowledge of critical aspects of photography and technicalities of the light, styling, and images.

The last thing any fashion photographer would want to do is look like an amateur running around and unsure what to do. Thankfully, there are different fashion designer course to help students work through the basics, so they will no longer feel daunted but instead be able to stroll in on their big day with confidence and most importantly, capture a great set of images that showcase a brand in the best light.

Whether you are shooting for a client, your fashion business, or just having fun apply the following tips from experts to make your fashion photo shoot a success.

Research

Research the location, models and garments that you’ll be shooting. Understanding these three aspects of a photo shoot not only helps elevate your images but can also help you relax on the day of the shot. Visit the location before the day of the shot and analyze how the light hits and look for interesting compositions and angles that you can use on the day.

Researching the models will prove helpful. One of the quick ways to do this is by having a quick look at Instagram and seeing how experienced the models are. If you’re shooting with a relatively inexperienced model, you might want to put together a little mood board to help the model get an idea of the poses you are looking for. Researching the garments and looking at little fine details that you can capture also help elevate your imagery and get a better end result.

Create a Shot List

Having a proper plan for the photo shoot is crucial for the success of the project. Make a shot list and share it with your team, the models, the hair and makeup team, and anyone who will be a part of the photoshoot.

A shot can help you in setting your budget and plan your shots. Your shot list should include:

  • The models
  • The outfits that are involved
  • The props you need
  • Artificial lights you will use, and
  • Other details like lighting angles, facial expressions, and more.

Lighting

Like with any genre of photography light plays a big role in fashion photoshoot. As a fashion photographer, it’s really important to learn both natural light and artificial light. While artificial light can be really daunting to master when you are starting out, natural light doesn’t always work in your favour.

Learning how to use both natural and artificial lights and how to manipulate them to create different movements can set you apart as a fashion photographer. If you are shooting outdoors, have artificial lights for backup to ensure that you get the shots that your client requires.

Incorporate movement

Incorporating movement not only creates a more dynamic image but can also really help show off a garment. For instance, if you are shooting a dress you can instruct the model to throw the dress around or spin it a little bit. This will help show off that garment nicely and make it a little bit more interesting for the viewer.

Capture the details

When you do research on the garments, look out for anything interesting that you can capture. It could be logos, zippers or interesting stitching. Shooting these details can help your client sell the garments. Shoot these details separately rather than just cropping in from a larger image because you want to ensure you nail that focus and the image quality is as high as it can.

Review your photos

After getting multiple shots, it can be hard to tell which are the winning photos. Once you wrap up the photoshoot and have a bit of time to rest, go through the photos and carefully review them as you go. Be super selective and avoid choosing multiple photos that exhibit exactly the same thing. Take only the best to go into editing

Master edit skills

When it comes to Fashion photography there is a fine line between conveying your style and keeping colours true-to-life. As fashion photography is a means of selling a product, it is really important to give an accurate representation of the product. When editing your images keep in mind to maintain the correct white balance and minimal colour manipulation.

Backup your work

There is a lot that goes into a photoshoot and getting that one perfect shot. So, don’t let all of your team’s hard work go to waste. Make sure to back up your photos as you go. Properly seal and store those rolls of film in a safe place and double back up everything.
