DIY DURING LOCKDOWN – By SHAILJA CHAUDHARY

The world is currently facing an unprecedented and severe health crisis as COVID-19 appeared in with a huge wave, bringing ‘life as we know it’ to a grinding halt. Naturally, everything, that’s not absolutely necessary, has taken a back seat. The nation is currently locked down to prevent as well as limit the spread of the disease any further. Since school, colleges and offices are all shut, each one of us face some or the other challenges every day. To make this lockdown a little productive and to keep us engaged, here are few things that you can make and decorate your homes without stepping out.

Disclaimer – None of the below mentioned recycling project demands fresh new supplies. So no need to step out! ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe’

1. Hair Accessories – Make bows out of scraps or braid them together. Now attach them to your plain and old Tic-tac pins and hairbands to add some zing.

2. Bedcovers & Runners – Choose wisely from your fabric scraps and arrange the pieces in a pattern that you like. Stitch them together to make square pieces and later join them together to make it of the desired size. You can even patch fabric pieces to the existing bedspreads to make them look beautiful.

3. Cushion Covers – Lighten up your living area or bedroom using cushions with bright and contrast colored fabric flower. You can even use your favorite t-shirt that doesn’t fit you anymore and is very close to your heart. Sew in the sleeves and neck opening. Insert the cushion and stitch the rest.

4. Camera strap Slipcover–Commercially produced camera straps can often be really uncomfortable around the neck. Also quirky and handmade straps are very much in vogue these days. Make a rectangular slip covers in desired length to add some personal touch. Hand embroidered and crochet straps would also look interesting.

5. Paper Flowers – All you need is colored paper and tape. Cut petals out paper of different shapes and arrange them to make a flower. For making the stem you can use tightly rolled newspapers and paint them.

6. Photo Frames – How badly you wanted to upgrade that old photo frame. Now is the time to do it. Paste the choice of your fabric on to the frame using adhesive like Fevicol or fabric glue. That’s all.

7. Bunting – Colourful fabric bunting is another decor item that transforms the space in no time. You just need to cut triangular pieces of fabric and stick them to a string. Use this decor piece around your photo frames, doors and windows to uplift the mood.

These are few ideas out of many to start with. Hope this gives a little motivation and you create masterpieces. Happy DIY!
