Do You Require any License in Fashion Designing

Thursday, March 4th, 2021

There is more to the fashion industry than classic runway shows, celebrity trends, and new season fashion rollouts. Anyone who is looking to build their career in fashion may have to find themselves working on one side or the other of a licensed product agreement. Candidates should specifically understand the role licensing plays. It’s one of the major aspects to be kept in mind while pursuing a career in Fashion.

How Licensing Works:

One of the established designers or a company brand is defined as the licensor that offers its trademark to other firms that are making different types of products. The license, or second corporation, offers not only to produce but also to sell the new product lines.

Designers also explore licensing their brand names into similar product categories outside of fashion to extend their business prospects. This may include a wide range of shoes, as well as fitness, home, and beauty products. The original brand may be licensed to a third party that will manufacture, market, and distributes the products and goods under the brand name.

The more traditional approach to do this for the original brand is by retaining all the aspects of apparel designs and production, while also extending the licensee rights to manufacture and market even the non-apparel categories. Whatever may the business arrangements be, the consumers should always perceive the brand as one entity. This should be done with no distinction in quality and appeal between the licensed products and core brand they may purchase.

Success in fashion licensing is only built by the perfect amalgamation of a successful original brand and a well-run licensing arrangement that are aware of their clear definition. It is very essential to have tight control over the design and quality of the products to preserve the brand image.

Benefits of Licensing:

  • Most of the fashion companies realize that properly done licensing offers a powerful way to grow brand awareness and build an image of their brand in the market.
  • This is not only applicable to the original core products but also for the expanded offerings in other segments.
  • The investments in the initial major products have already been made by saving on the cost of outlays for new licensed product lines.
  • Offering licensing to a third-party manufacturer gives the original brand access to another entity’s expertise and their various channels of distribution.
  • Certain product categories demonstrate the extended strength in product licensing sales, reflecting on the essential general market trends and guiding other designers to follow certain steps while considering their licensing options.
  • Major fashion brands extend their licenses to the manufacturers of unrelated products to ask them to serve as the extenders of the brand name into unattainable markets.
  • License holders gain from associating their products with a well-known and influential brand, as well as the advantages that come with it.

Risks and Cautions Involved in Licensing:

Designers who get themselves involved in these licensing ventures should be extremely aware that they are giving someone else a little control over part of their brand for any specific services and products involved. They should be mindful of developing an agreement with another entity based on careful consideration of every aspect that can impact the original brand and its business. It is very important to specify certain things in the agreement. This includes:

  • Information about specific products that are included.
  • What kind of market distribution will take place? Will it be only domestic, only international, or a combination of both.
  • The details about the stores that will carry the products, be it online stores or retail stores.
  • What is the term of the agreement and whether it can be renewed from time to time?

How Quality Control of the Products will be Maintained

The licensor has to perform extensive research while finding a partner company. This research is done to determine if they can make and sell the products of the original brand. The prospective partner is expected to demonstrate a good rate of success in their industry segment, delivering work on time and maintaining excellent relations with the customers.

Licensing in a Fashion Business is a Two-way Street:

The ultimate success of any fashion business agreement depends on the degree to which it is mutually benefitting, workable, and rewarding for both parties. Naturally, each party will look for advantages in this agreement. It is very smart to draw an agreement that specifically works on the respective strengths of each company and look forward to protecting each of them from any harm. This is done to avoid any mismanaged condition that may arrive during the agreement.

During times of disagreement, misunderstanding, or change of business status, even the best working relationships tend to become unmanageable. That time the license may simply want to terminate the agreement. Therefore, during situations like these a perfectly manageable fashion business agreement comes into play.

Licensing apparel industry relationships are challenging business arrangements with a lot of outside pressures and considerations that can impact the businesses’ success. Despite their best efforts, one or both partners may prove unequal in their tasks or fail to perform their duties. That’s why a successful deal will contain an out clause or an escape mechanism depending on such incidents.

Career Opportunity as a Fashion Licensing Advisor:

Taking into consideration the risks and potential liabilities of a fashion business licensing agreement, a successful brand has to rely on a professional licensing advisor or agent. A professional adviser will be someone who has worked in the fashion industry for a long time and knows the value of terms like net profits, royalty payments, and fixed minimums.

Licensing does more than just building sales for a fashion brand. It generates new and expanded economic strength as well. It even opens various job opportunities for candidates who have done a fashion business management course from a renowned institute. We at JD institute offer our students a deeper understanding of the importance of fashion licensing in their fashion business management course. This opens up various career opportunities for any individual.

What Are The Important Elements of Visual Merchandising

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2021

People often get uneasy when they hear about visual merchandise. They know it is an important term when it comes to retail but are not certain as to how to do it well. There can be uncertainty about where to start. Creating visual displays can prove to be challenging if you are financially or artistically deprived. JD Institute has bought some important elements of visual merchandise which are easy to implement and will aid in increasing your sales. But before that let’s look at the visual merchandise meaning:

Visual merchandise refers to the practice of the retail industry of presenting the products in the best manner possible or make their services better to highlight their features or benefits with the motive of attracting the customers to purchase the product. It can be in the way of interactive displays, window displays, Mannequins, signage etc.

  • Always Remember That Colour is the King

Colour is a powerful element, it can make or break your visual display. The display can still be a success if it is erratic but the colours coordinate well. Contrasting colours should be considered such as monochromatic colours, black and white etc which create intriguing or eye-catching displays. Use colours in such a way that it leads customers to the visual display

  • Create a Focal Point

Where does the viewer focus while looking at a display? Are their eyes moving to a specific location? Or are they confused as to where to look? Creating a focal point is crucial. Examine your display from the point of view of the customer: from the bottom, top, sides. Always ensure that the hotspots or merchandise is easily visible as many people place their focal point too high for the customers to see. Always remember that hotspot is a product and not an element that you add to the story

  • Merchandising Tells a Story

Tell the customers what’s in there for them through your merchandising. Use powerful signage or salles enabling signage to reflect the advantages that will come from buying the product. Try to put bullet points that will make it easy for the customers to see why they need this product. This will help the customer to understand everything around the product or make a decision. Even if there are no words, the image should speak volume

  • Expose The Customers to the Maximum Amount of Visual Merchandise

An impactful or well-designed display will always expose the customers to the maximum amount of merchandise without making a mess. The more products customers see, the more they tend to buy. Many retailers use a circular store layout which acts as a powerful way as it exposes customers to more merchandise when compared to the traditional aisles. If your store does reflect aisles, place a display in the dead corners so that customers are forced to look at the products. Ensure the aisles are barrier-free or spacious so that customers do not deter from the product.

For example- dining tables can be used to display shoes as they will reflect boldness.

  • Use the Space Wisely

Each retail store reflects underutilized spaces. For example- the section between the merchandise which is displayed to the ceiling can be used for various purposes such as signage providing information about the product. Lifestyle graphics can also be used so that customers make an association with the product. Visual merchandise is multi-faceted which allows the retailers to choose from hundreds of ideas at the time of designing displays.

Use these tips to make the most out of your store and increase sales. What Are the Main Key Facts & Figures on Fashion and Sustainability?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2021

We all have faced that situation when we look back at our photos and think as to what we were wearing? What is trending at one point of time becomes a fashion faux pas the next minute which we regret later in life such as the awkward era of bucket hats or head to toe denim.

With each season, trends change and so do our clothes with fashion waste cluttering our wardrobe. It is high time we make sustainable fashion a trend for every season.

Why is Sustainable Fashion Significant?

Fashion waste can come from multiple issues, but one of the major causes is the fast fashion which is a term reflecting clothes which are made in a quick manner and at a cheap cost to meet the demands of new styles. This makes the customer toss out them a few times leading to a long-lasting environmental issue. let’s take a look at the effects of fashion waste:

  • Microfibres found in fabrics threaten the aquatic life by winding up in the ocean
  • Synthetic fibres usually add to the landfills as they don’t break down along with many other types of clothing
  • An increase in toxins and pesticides take place while making clothes
  • Poorly made clothing to meet the trends or follow the on-style leads.

Facts and Figures About Fashion and Sustainability

  • Around 8-9% of the greenhouse gas emissions come from apparel or footwear industry
  • According to a report of McKinsey in 2016, three-fifth of the clothing items will become an addition in the landfills within a year
  • If the same environment is seen in the fashion world, by 2050 more than 25 per cent of the carbon budget which is associated with the 20 c pathway will be used up by it.
  • Worldwide, clothes are bought increasingly but they are not worn as the utilization of clothing has decreased by 36 per cent from the past 15 years
  • According to an estimate, less than 1 per cent of the materials which are used in the process of clothing is recycled into something else leading to huge loss i.e 100 billion USD of material lost each year
  • By 2030, fashion waste can increase up to 148 million tons
  • According to the global fashion agenda, the main barrier when it comes to sustainability is customers unwillingness to buy premium products
  •  Customers favour sustainability as around 60 per cent of the millennials have agreed on sustainability
  • 12.5 per cent of the market has pledged to move towards sustainability till 2050
  • Patagonia which is a clothing brand was the first brand to make polyester fleece out of a plastic bottle
  • Cotton, a popular material in the clothing world requires a high amount of pesticides and water, which becomes tough for developing countries
  • Textile processing uses around 2,000 different chemicals even when only 16 is allowed by environment protection agency
  • Only 13-15% of customers recycle their used clothes

Ways to Reduce Fashion Waste

  • Rent, recycle, reuse
  • Shop smart
  • Swap clothes with your friends
  • Choose quality over quantity
  • Focus less on trending clothes or clothes on discount

7 Easy Steps to Build a Resume by JD Institute

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2021

If you think about all the information you need to share with prospective employers, creating a resume can be challenging. For a job interview your educational background, employment history, qualification, and skills need to be presented in such a way that helps you stay apart from the crowd. Including information specific to the position you are applying holds importance as well. JD Institute Of Fashion Technology (which is one of the oldest  premium and the best institute dedicated to art and design and also has been awarded a various token of appreciation due to their exemplary contribution to education such as leaders in education award or best vocational institute award etc) is here with 7 easy interview and resume building tips that will help you nail your interview:

Step 1: Compile information

Collect the information you need before you start writing your resume. When you have all the details in mind it is much easier to write, edit or format a document. Make a list of contact information that you need, education, training, certification or skills, etc.

Step 2: Write Your Resume

Once you have completed the first step, it should be listed in the proper order i.e heading of the resume (which should include your full name, address, city, email id etc), profile, a summary of the qualifications, experience, education, certification, award and accomplishments, skills and personal interests. Don’t focus on the fonts or formatting yet. Once you see the full picture of your candidacy it will be much easier to edit. You can also refer to resume writing examples to get a better hold of it.

Step 3: Choose a Layout for Your Resume

There are three basic types of layout that can be used for your resume which will depend on your credentials or employment history.

  • Chronological: this is one of the most frequently used layouts in which you start writing your work history by writing your most recent job first.
  • Combination: this layout of your resume reflects both your chronological work history and skills
  • Functional: it focuses on your experiences and skills, if you reflect a spotty work history, this is the layout you should go for.

Step 4: Format the Text of Your Resume

At the time of deciding fonts for your resume, always remember simple is the best. As everything comes with the exception, in this if you are applying for a design-related job etc your format or resume can reflect design skills.

Choose a Font: basic fonts like Calibri, Times new roman, Arial etc is a good choice for your resume as it should be easy to read for the manager. Consistency is another major key that you need to reflect in your resume. Make sure you use the same font throughout your resume

Font Size and Type: the size or style of the font can vary. For example a larger font can be used for the headings or name while italics or bold can be used as a method of highlighting details of your employment history or education etc

Lists vs Paragraphs: a bullet list in the job description makes it much easier to read when compared to paragraphs while each sentence should reflect a brief synopsis of the strongest achievements in the position you were in.

Step 5: Save the Document

At the time of saving select a file name that reflects your name in it for example- markapplicantresume.doc it will also be an easier task for the manager to track your application materials. Make sure you save it in various formats so that you can cater to the specific needs of the employer,

Step 6: Proofread and Print the Final Version

It’s crucial to proofread your resume once you finalize it. Take a printout to ensure the printed pages line up to what is there on the computer. Once that step is done, take some extra copies so that you can take them at the time of the interview.

What Luxury Fashion Brands Want in a Fashion/Creative Director?

Monday, March 1st, 2021

A creative director role no longer begins and ends with only designing a collection, now there is much more than that in this job. He is now responsible for developing and executing the brand’s vision in their design collections, social media and in real-time presence. Creative directors have to always serve as the brand figureheads. Therefore, they have to be extremely analytical towards the brand’s performance and work. Earlier it was comparatively easy for a creative director to do his job but now due to increased competition, modern creative directors are expected to conceptualise everything related to the brand be it social media strategy, advertising campaigns or brand collaborations. A creative director is someone who is not just good at creating products and collections but also is able to apply his artistic qualities in the betterment of the positioning of the brand. A brand before actually jumping into finding a creative director that fits their brand, go for a hunt of creative directors in their own spectrum.

Steps brands follow to find Creative director:

1. Promoting from Within: We instruct you to start your hunt for a creative director internally that is in your own company. Existing design people understand the working and the brand more effectively. Thus, helping to ease the situation by becoming a creative director. In order to promote internal talent, brands must have systems that groom the junior employees to take up tasks that require their leadership. The person must be able to brainstorm and make healthy decisions on their own. A Major insight into the real working as a creative director is required to be given to potential junior employees. Regardless of whether an employee for this job is promoted internally or recruited, a creative director should be someone who gets up with the management easily and sets up the entire team for success.

2. Looking for External Talent: An external search for an employee is the best route to take when a brand hasn’t established a proper system for an internal promotion or is in need of fresh talents in the company. Though, bringing recruiting someone from the outside of the company requires detailed screening yet it is one of the sensible tasks to do while recruiting. At first, external candidates are assigned a project that requires them to outline what they perceive about the brand and its vision. They will have to handle projects that require them to showcase more and more talent of theirs that make the hiring brand sure about the employee. This process helps both the candidate and the brand to decide whether this position is the right fit for either of them. It’s important to communicate about the working environment to the external candidate while hiring.

3. Matchmaking: A new creative director doesn’t alienate the brand’s existing customers; instead they cater to them while also widening the reach of the brand. As the creative director role demands a lot of creative skill sets, therefore while hiring the top priority is to find talent that can create a lasting impact on the customers regarding the brand with their talent.

Having said that, creative directors need to be polished in some of the skill sets that majorly helps in being a creative fashion director. Let’s get to know some of the skills that a creative director needs to have.

Skills Creative Director Needs to Have:

1. Creative Skills: Creativity is one of the most essential skills that a creative director needs to have in a fashion designing industry. It is required while formulating a fashion design concept for the brand. A creative director must be able to portray the vision of a certain style effectively in their designs. They must be able to generate new and fresh ideas that are appealing to the target customer base. A fashion design idea should be such that inspires and appeals to the target audience.

2. Communication Skills: While it’s important for a creative director to have creative ideas, in order to communicate those ideas with the team the creative director must have great communication skills. A creative director’s idea can only take a real shape if he/she is able to communicate it with the other team members that are equally responsible for shaping the idea in reality.  Execution of ideas is very important while thinking of running a brand in the fashion industry. The creative director must also be able to listen to the creative ideas of other team members patiently. Networking and communicating is one of the major skills required to be a creative designer.

3. Leadership Skills: Many decisions that are made in a fashion designing company depends on the leadership skills of the creative director. After effectively having a conversation with the team members, a creative director must be able to make the final decision on behalf of the brand. The creative director must have a strong ability to take charge of the projects. Doing time management, pulling all tasks together and getting the work done majorly falls under the job role of a creative director. Thus, creative directors can’t afford to lose their leadership skills.

4. Technical Skills: A creative director needs both technical and artistic skills in order to execute their creative ideas in reality. Having a skill set in operating graphic-design computer software is a must for a creative director. Designing allows the creative director to quickly jot their ideas down on paper. Utilizing technical skills helps creative directors to create and share fashion designing ideas.

Creative directors have to graduate from Fashion Design Course and then take roles of an art director in a fashion designing company. No matter which company a creative director works in, they have to use the skills of creativity, leadership and technical skills. Fashion designing course at JD Institute of Fashion Technology helps focus on the creative approach to developing fashion designing in the fashion industry. At JD Institute of Fashion Technology, we encourage students to take up a Fashion Designing Course to have their skills sharpened through our Fashion programs.

Jigisha Awasthi

Monday, March 1st, 2021

I have a lot of interest in designing and styling garments but at the same time, I feel that the fashion industry is not applicable to everything as my family roots are from Uttar Pradesh Kanpur so a conundrum occurs eventually. I look forward to proving to my family how fashion designing can open pathways to excellence and success with my focus. I want them to view this career option with something that holds great opportunities for the youth and prevent them from imposing their mainstream idea of a good career on their kids.’ Also, I feel it is our responsibility to change the rigid notion about how a girl should dress up based on their class or religion.

Despite my orientation towards styling my dad too tried to prevent me from dressing up in a certain way that involved body fit or short dresses. His rationale behind the notion was that it’s a privilege exercised by those who have achieved something in the field of fashion designing. He wanted me to do B A and then b ed. and I was adamant about doing something that always interested me. I did my research for finding the best colleges and landed up with JD as my preference for the assurance I felt from their team for providing a platform where I can prove myself. I attended an open house with my dad where we were educated about what would learn in this whole journey in JD. Which helped my dad understand the creative fields and the growth it has to offer. I enrolled at JD and started exploring my potential. I participated in teachers day, Diwali function, I became miss Freshers with my talent. I’ve worked hard and will continue to do till I reach for stars. My college also gave this wonderful platform to showcase our work which TFA which helps us in learning the different stages of how we prepare our installation and garments, also we learn teamwork how to present work .. I’ve learned a lot in this short time. I am becoming more confident in my expressions as my JD Journey unfolds.

How to Keep Up Sales with Visual Merchandising

Sunday, February 28th, 2021

What is Visual Merchandising?

Visual merchandise refers to the designing and presentation of products or services to highlight their features or benefits in a better manner. The purpose behind visual merchandise is to engage or attract, motivate the customers to go towards making a purchase.

Visual merchandise helps in creating an impression or impact on each person who visits your business. To optimize the retail space, anything which the customer can see from the outside to all of the interiors should be considered.to increase customers or sales and to reflect the brand, visual merchandising is crucial.

JD Institute is here with some techniques of visual merchandise or visual merchandising techniques that will aid in increasing sales:

  • Display for Target Customers

The journey of the customer begins with discovery, then moving into a comparison of the options and ultimately to final conversion and sale. Setting the tone for the target customers is crucial for taking them from the discovery stage to sale. Aim to appeal parallel to the lifestyle they desire

  • Sometimes Less Can Be More

A visual assault often leads to the customer being overwhelmed. Clashing colours or too many options leads to a display that looks like a toddler tossing all the toys on the floor resulting in chaos. This will lead to a situation when the customers will walk away. Try to keep it as simple or clutter-free as possible and instead focus on spotlighting a few items.

  • Try to Convey a Story

To make it easier for the customers to connect or to make the design process easier, a story for visual merchandising can help a lot. The story can be flowing throughout the retail store through a single cohesive theme or can be specific to a single display.

Don’t try to make the narrative complex, it can be as simple as back to school. same colours or keywords in signage can be used to keep the theme cohesive

  • Try to Be Specific with Signage

Even if the display compliments perfectly with the product, if the signage fails, the product fails as a whole. Worldly signs should be avoided as too much information tends to get in Always stick to the five-second rule which states that you should be able to read it in less than five seconds without any confusion. If your message has to be longer, try to use the signs aesthetically into the overall theme of the merchandise.

  • To Attract Foot Traffic, Go for window Displays

Showcase the newest or most valuable products on the window to attract foot traffic. The windows need to be well cleaned and lighted up to make a great first impression as no one would be interested in a store that appears to be dark, neglected etc. signage should be focused upon in this as well.

  • Knowledgeable Sales Team

Each member of the sales team should be knowledgeable about the items associated with visual merchandise displays. This plays importance for interactive displays. The potential to sale decreases if the member of the sales team can’t answer a question of the customer.

  • Analyze Sales and Change Weekly Displays Accordingly

An important touchpoint in the customer’s decision journey is visual merchandise. For it to be effective, it is important to analyse sales and change the weekly displays accordingly as the old displays are invisible to regular customers. What Changes are Required in the Fashion Industry

Saturday, February 27th, 2021

For a broken fashion system, the much-anticipated reports from the Boston consulting group and council of fashion designers of America offered a few solutions. Retail industries are affected majorly due to the rise of fast fashion and frequently shifting consumer shopping preferences along with high fashion brands reflecting a slow reaction to it. These brands are held to strict presentation calendars with regards to launching new lines.

Typical, the fashion shows which reflect new collections in fall represent the clothes for next spring while the shows in spring reflect the styles for fall. There are ready to wear apparels or pieces which are released in the following months as well. Many famous companies like Forever 21 or Zara etc take ideas from these presentations, imbibe those in a season-appropriate manner and at fewer prices.

This is typically viewed as a market opportunity as people buying from fast fashion brands take price as the utmost consideration. A change in tune has been seen when it comes to shopping irrespective of all ages and budget which is known as the “see now and buy now” trend in which a designer makes his presentation more season-appropriate and ready to wear.

Three major challenges according to the reports with regards to fast fashion are as follows:

  • Merchandise at Retail is Increasingly Out of Sync due to the race to early deliveries and markdowns while the consumers demand apparels that are closer to when they need it.
  • A Trend or Design Seems To Be Stale by the Time it Reaches the Store as in the time of social media or advanced technology, images or live videos from the fashion shows are available worldwide which expose customers to all the latest trends much before it hits the store
  • The Danger Related to Designer Creative Burnout- complexity of pre-collection coupled with the confusion of fashion cycle leaves very less amount of time for the creative process putting immense pressure on the creative talent etc

The answers given by the report of the Boston consulting group and council of fashion designers of America are as follows:

Solution 1: There should be more intimate press appointments 5-6 months before delivery which will enable the option to have in-season activations when it is delivered to stores

If there are previews of the line at least 5-6 months in advance to earn exclusive press attention, partnerships, or positioning for the collection, The shoppers’ lack of novelty can be stopped.

The benefit of this idea will be as follows:

  • For Brands: it will boost full price selling and will increase the returns on investment and will free up much more time for designers to focus on the creative process
  • For Retailers: as the deliveries will be timed closer it will lead to an increase in the perceived newness.
  • Press: it will increase the relevance of advertising or the ability to measure return on the marketing spend when it comes to traditional or new media

Solution 2: Maintaining the current timing but for increased shoppability including capsule collections.

To address the shifting consumer preferences, this is how most high-end brands are dealing with the same also known as the “see now, buy now” trend. It will address the demand for more immediacy along with building excitement for future collections.
