Well, let’s quickly delve into the skills which make for a great fashion designer.
1. Creativity – The first and foremost skill which is needed by a fashion designer is to be creative, something they should have which makes them separate from the crowd, a creative fashion designer is not just born but also made, if one opens the horizons of learning, focuses on many art forms to take inspiration, learns new types of artworks and studies them, they can very well enhance their creativity and by that they can analyze existing trends and innovate new designs which will make their work different from other fashion designers.
2. Visualisation & Sketching – Many people dream vividly, and build magical castles in their heads but does everyone achieve their dream? NO, why so? Well, it happens because people forget to visualize their dreams and then augment them into reality. To make dreams come true they need to work towards that goal and just like that Fashion designers need to visualize their next project so vividly that it breaks the shackles of their minds, but at the same time try to bring it into reality by making a sketch of it, which will help them gather their thoughts into existence and their masterpiece would come to like.
3. Communication Skills– Be it any place or any field in order to succeed this soft skill is very important, a fashion designer can communicate to his audience and tell them what was on their mind while creating that project and tell them vividly how they feel about it and makes the outfit look even better by communicating with their audience is when they have mastered communication skills. Moreover, communication and interpersonal skills are also needed when they have to communicate to their team to get updates and get things done, hence this is a must-have key skill.
4. Good Understanding of market and consumer needs – As a fashion designer one may be working for different segments of the market, from aesthetic clothes, footwear to a daily wear t-shirt, a fashion designer course has all the boxes checked, hence to make the product to the relevance of their market or their consumer they need to know them, know the likes and dislikes, their preference, there are many types of people in the market but a fashion designer must find their niche and work according to that segment of the market which they are most compatible with.
5. Knowledge about different fabrics – There are so many different kinds of fabrics from silk to cotton, chiffon to denim, muslin to leather and so many more. Now, all the fabrics are different in their structure, are worn in different seasons, some are warm and heavy while some are light and cool, every fabric has its quality and it’s very important to know the different fabrics as a particular design may not be suited for cotton which is suited for leather material and vice versa, knowing different types of fabrics gives an upper edge in designing and getting the best results.
6. Eye For Detail – A very important aspect of the job of Fashion designers is an eye for detail, almost 90% of people don’t look out for the minute details which a fashion designer does and it creates a huge impact on the overall outcome of the product. For example, I once had a MI (Mumbai Indians ) hoodie which was similar to the official jersey but it has a slight bit of paint in the background as well, I always thought of it as a normal design or something, turns out when I met my friend who’s currently studying in Jd Institute and pursuing a fashion designer course told me that it just wasn’t an ordinary design it was the map of Mumbai crafted so beautifully at the back of it that not everyone who looks at it would figure it out.
Other than these skills, there are some more skills which are needed to become a Fashion Designer, however, they’re just not limited to a particular industry they are for all other industries as well, they are as follows –
