The first-ever known jewellery originated in Africa and was made of shell and Ostrich eggshells. This tale goes back to the time it was almost 75,000 years ago. Later on, people started making jewellery with bones, teeth and similar materials. Though one can find the existence of Jewellery even before 3,000-5,000 BC, jewellery making was still not truly established until then.  Then, Gold was only used in metalworking. Jewellery made of Gold was not a thing until then. 

Origin of Indian Jewellery

The origin of jewellery in India started almost 5000 years ago when the hunters of the Indus valley bought jewellery making to India with the discovery of diamonds. During 7000 – 5500 BC, artisans of the Indus Valley used shells and gemstones to craft rudimentary fabrications. The Indus Valley artisans were very well skilled in cutting, shaping and putting the gemstones together using gold.

When the Indo-Greek oceanic trade was found, India’s gold jewellery design demands increased as Greeks were the most common buyers of the gemstones that were present in India. Also, as India was the first country to mine diamonds, it was the only country to supply gemstones and diamonds to the outer world for more than 2000 years. 

Jewellery in Vedic Times

After this, the origin of jewellery also goes back to Vedic times. During the Vedic time period, different theories like Ratna Pariksha and the Ratna Rahasya explain the process of cutting and structuring the gemstones for astrological purposes. One can even witness the Indian craftsmen depicting the beauty of gemstone and diamond jewellery in their Vedic time paintings. The origin of this jewellery making in India is also influenced by various invaders that left a touch of their art in the jewellery that we witness in India’s history. When European colonial power existed in India, we could see a touch of their European designs in our Indian jewellery.
