Fashion designing refers to the art of beautifying clothes with unique clothes construction, designs and accessories. It is believed to be started around the 19th century with Charles Frederick Worth who was the first designer ever to have his name sewn on the garment. Over the years many different styles have come up with the fashion industry growing every day making it one of the biggest industries with neck to neck competition. What are the skills that are required that can make you unique or can you make you stand out from the crowd in this Industry? We’ve got you covered.
The foremost skill which is required is creativity, now let’s focus upon what creativity really means? Creativity refers to the rt of taking anything and converting into a mesmerizing piece of art. For example- you take a seashell on the beach and visualize how to create a good picture frame around it, in the same way as a fashion designer you are taking a two-dimensional photo or sketch and converting it into something three dimensional. Even when you are looking at a piece of fabric, your mind should sense what it will look like in a garment
Another important skill which is required is to have an eye that looks at anything and visualises how to make it better. For example- when we go shopping and see a t-shirt etc we think of what will look good with it or what combination will look perfect with it, that is the job of a stylist and people often confuse stylist with designers, a designer, on the other hand, works on creating that very garment better with its designs etc
You should have an eye as to how a garment should fit on as a person be it, man or woman. You should be able to make out if even a quarter inch is off from the fitting which will help you a lot in being a good designer.
The word “talent” is especially used as these two things are not that easy to learn. It is something that every designer should possess for example- you should be able to say this colour is too red or too blue or how the colours should be tweaked so that it looks better, and this comes with experience so make sure you have as much practical experience as possible.
No matter if you are working for yourself or for a company, working for long hours of 16-17 hours straight is normal in this industry and it never ends, if yoy don’t possess the passion or determination towards it, you will become irritated which will reflect in the quality of work that you do
This field requires quick actions on situations like when the fabric you wanted didn’t come on time or something came up that is a matter of urgency etc, you need to display out of the box thinking or creativeness to maintain that reputation or to be successful in this career
To become a good fashion designer, you need to be great at multitasking for example- most of the fashion designers work on around 5 seasons together such as approving fall production strike off, sourcing fabric for the spring line etc
As a fashion designer, you will need a lot of people to work in the process due to which you should possess the ability to work well with others for the smooth functioning of the process or for delivering what you promised etc
This is another important skill, as it is really important to detach your emotions as there might be something that you like but the customer doesn’t so make sure you fulfill the vision of the customer or the person you are designing for
Apart from these skills, a great amount of knowledge is required to become a successful fashion designer for which a good institution is required, JD Institute Of Fashion Technology is one of the best institutes providing fashion designing courses or fashion designing in India such as Bsc in fashion designing with each course being tailor-made for the students and a record-breaking placement of 99% ensuring that talent meets opportunity or ensuring that its students make a mark in the industry.
