What Are The Tools Of Pattern Making

The pattern making group of any garment manufacturing company should be well equipped. It will help the company during a bulk amount of production. The garment manufacturers should use the latest pattern making technology and techniques for efficient and effective work. For fluent workability, a pattern maker should also be aware of the various tools and techniques which are to be used. They must be familiar with the names and uses of the tools. This article talks about the various tools used for pattern making.

Dummy Doll

Dummy dolls are beneficial for people who make patterns. They help the designer to get the costume measurement accurate. Pattern grading is also boosted within various sizes from dummy dolls. 

Digitize Table 

The work of digitizing tables is to convert manually drawn patterns on paper to computerized digital patterns. At times you may get patterns drawn on paper from the buyer to be developed. In that case, this table will help you to digitize it. 

Black Twill Tape

Black twill tapes are used for placing style cords on dresses. They are helpful as well as very effective pattern tools. 

Curve Rules 

Curve rules or French Curves are pattern making tools that are used for shaping armholes and necklines. They are made of transparent plastic, which makes it easy for the designer to cut and draw. The various shapes of necks and side depths are measured using curve rules. Even the bottom of the garments is also shaped using this curve rule. 

Pencils and Pens

Pencils are very helpful and easy to mark on pattern papers. There are many colored pencils that are used to mark various sections for parts. Each color is used to mark a separate thing. Generally, black, red, green, and blue pens are used to write about the information regarding the pattern. At the same time, red and blue colored pencils are utilized to indicate changes in the pattern.  

Rulers 

Rulers are an essential part of the pattern making unit. It is used for measuring different things. For marking hems and checking grain lines, the rulers come to use extensively. Tailors Square or L scale is one of the basic requirements of pattern makers. It is also familiar with the name of tri scale. Commonly, they are made from steel but you can also find them in wooden versions. It has got two arms. One arm measures 24″, while the other measures 14″. It forms a right angle with the joining of the two arms. They also help in drawing straight edges and proper right angles. 

Leg Shaper 

Leg shapers are used to measure the inner portion of the leg. They are available in 24″ or 36″ scales and are made of wood or plastic. 

Milton Cloth 

Milton cloth or thick blue coloured woollen cloth is used for drafting. Fashion students extensively use them for practising drafts. The surface of the cloth can be brushed and used again until the drafting is proper. 

Brown Paper 

Brown paper is very useful in drafting. They are placed on the drafting table before drafting. Whatever be the case, a grainline should be drawn on the brown paper for ease. 

Metal Weight 

The work of the metal weights is somewhat like the paperweights. They are big iron pieces that are placed on the pattern papers. They help in satisfactory marking and tracing. 

Measuring Tape

Measuring tape is a handy tool that is used for body measurements. It has a standard length of 60″ or 152 cm. You can measure using two sides of this tape. On one side of the tape, you get measurements in inches, and on the other, you get it in centimetres. 

It is an essential tool, without which the pattern makers can’t work. It is also used to measure the size of the patterns. Suitable garments are obtained from proper measurements. To measure correctly, you need a measuring tape to procure appropriate marking. 

Magic Mend Scotch Tape 

Magic mend scotch tapes are used to patch various items. They can be used to fix up pattern work as well as fix patterns to dummy. 

Hanger Hooks or Rings 

Hanger hooks are used to hang patterns on a rod. It helps in keeping the pattern papers properly. 

Push Pins 

Pushpins are used for separating pattern papers. It helps in preventing slippage of papers while cutting a huge pile of pieces together. 

Notcher

A notcher is used for indicating seam allowance, centerline, front, and back of patterns. Notchers help the sewers in assembling various parts of garments correctly. 

Normal Table 

A normal table helps the sewer to cut patterns and develop them properly. These tables are flat or are available on a 45° vertical axis. 

Tracing Wheels

Tracing wheels are used to transmit the shape of the pattern on paper for creating a sample.  

Straight Pins 

Straight pins are ideal for wrapping and fitting. Dressmakers widely use them. 

Straight Pin Holder 

A straight pin holder is a very interesting thing. They are generally tiny cushion pillows or magnets which are used to store the pins. It keeps the pin assembled on the table. 

Scissors

The work of the scissors is nothing different from the ordinary ones. Yet there are paper scissors, embroidery scissors, pinking scissors, big scissors that are used by dressmakers.
