THE ANCIENT ART OF JADAU

Indian jewelry has tremendous value and appreciated worldwide for its fine craftsmanship and intricate designs. Jewelry trends changes with time but when it comes to Royal Indian weddings or Big Fat Indian Weddings the most preferred, (perhaps most loved too) kind is the Kundan Polki. Recent celebrity weddings like Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, who got married in the traditional, royal  Indian style, have won our hearts with their choice of traditional Indian jewelry, where the traditional art of Jadau is teamed with vibrant colors. Kundan Polki jewelry is one of the oldest forms of Indian Jewelry popular since Mughal Era. The alluring technique behind the jewelry lies in its intricacy often requiring expert craftsmanship. When it is all about adding royal touch to the wedding this jewelry style is almost always the most preferred one.

The city of Jaipur in Rajasthan has traditionally been the centre for kundan jewelry in India. Gopalji ka Rasta” is one such lane in Johri Bazar where most of the craftsmen have their manufacturing units set up. Polki is nothing but the unfinished Natural diamonds popularly known as “uncut diamonds”. Polki is very expensive because of using diamonds in its pure form. Kundan Jewelry uses gemstones and glass whereas ‘Jadau’ is the technique used to make kundan polki jewelry. “Jadau” is the process of setting gemstone by inserting gold foil. A silver foil is placed under the stone which makes the stone look brighter. Each piece is handcrafted and generally requires long hours to create one kundan masterpiece as the manufacturing procedure is highly complex too.

“Jadau” jewelry uses many different colors making it appear more vibrant,  wherein by making the beautiful patterns on both sides they become wearable on any side. Rubies and emeralds along with polki’s are the most preferred gemstones as they impart a desirable, royal touch to any jewelry.

The pastel shades in the jewelry has become very popular lately. The elaborate chokers, long chains with pearls, large size pendants along with unshaped polki’s and tumble stones is the new trend.
