Fashion Designing and Sustainability

Tuesday, January 12th, 2021

The world is a paradise that offers a sufficient amount of fashion options and items to opt for. Behind all of the glamour of a fashion styling industry lies a depleting fashion industry that is in a great debt of depletion. In today’s era of depletion, ‘Sustainability’ is the only concept that could lead to a healthy world. Sustainability is a revolutionary action that is adopted by the fashion styling industry in order to manage damage control. Nowadays, fashion designers have created a great deal of sustainable styling that offers a revolutionary change in not just the fashion system but also in society. Here, we are with a list of actions that you could implement in order to become a sustainable fashion designer.

Tips to become a sustainable fashion designer

  1. Slow down: Fashion designers are the ultimate creators of new fashion trends. Fast fashion system has made the environment a hub of fashion wastes that includes disposed clothes and other fashion styling accessories. The only step that could make a difference in the environment now is slowing down these fast fashion systems. That’s when a sustainable designer comes into the loop. The major focus of a sustainable fashion designer is to choose quality over quantity.

Slow fashion system allows designers to establish transparency in his or her designs while the production process takes place. By avoiding mass production of the fashion styling things, one can use the resources at a more realistic pace. This kind of product helps in less wastage of fashion waste and meets more demand of the growing fashion styling industry.  We can do our small bid too by avoiding the trends that will not last long. This way we are helping in sustainability too. Help customers find their true fashion voice.

Though, as a consumer of a fashion styling industry fast fashion might seem more convenient and cheap than slow fashion. But slow fashion is effective in the long run. It is true that it will take time to educate society about the fast fashion cycle. But what sustainable fashion designers are doing is very important for society.

  1. Choose materials wisely: Materials are important to make garments and therefore materials do make a difference in the fashion styling industry. In order to reduce unwanted disposals of the garments, the longevity of a garment needs to be increased. It is very important as a sustainable fashion designer to pick the right garment material that reduces the chances of early disposal of the garment.

A sustainable fashion designer should also be mindful of the durability of garment material. He or she should know what garment material is sustainable and gentle on our planet. Organic and natural fibres such as cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo, etc are the material options that are beneficial and healthy for our environment. A sustainable fashion designer should avoid synthetic fibres like nylon, polyester, spandex, etc as they are harmful to our environment.

A sustainable fashion styling industry could also give a warm welcome to the recycled materials. A sustainable fashion designer can use plastics in order to create sustainable fashion wear.

  1. Be vocal about your cause: As sustainability prioritizes quality therefore it has made its way into many people’s fashion choices. Sustainable fashion choices have become a valid option adopted by the consumers as they are realizing that the planet needs to be taken seriously now and they don’t even have to compromise with their fashion style while choosing sustainable fashion options. As designers, one is not just entitled to share their knowledge about shapes or colours but also sharing the importance of sustainable fashion. The fashion designers are the voice of their brand. Therefore, be vocal about what you care about. Be it about the planet or a crisis, make sure to stand up for your cause through your sustainable fashion choices. And let people follow you in your venture of careness and values. This will not only help you as a sustainable fashion designer but also helps in building healthy buying habits in your consumers.
  1. Reduce waste: Another essential step to fashion sustainability is to minimize the waste being produced during garment construction. Effective use of the pattern-making techniques by the smart placement of patterns on the fabric could result in the production of less waste.  As a sustainable fashion designer one should make sure that the remaining pieces of the unwanted clothes are collected and recycled. Think creative ideas that would lead to fashion sustainability. Waste is never a waste until and unless you think it as a waste. Therefore, think out of the box ideas that would be vital for revolutionary fashion sustainability.
  1. Care labels: Another essential method of incorporating fashion sustainability in designing is through care labels. A sustainable fashion designer should have an understanding of the instructions labelled on a care label. There should be properly written care instructions on the labels of the garments. This will directly help in sustaining the durability and longevity of the garment. Hence, reducing the chances of discarding these garments. In order to keep the garment long-lasting, we need to even teach the customers to care for those garments.
  1. Upcycle: Upcycling is one of the remarkable approaches to sustainable fashion. During upcycling, sustainability meets creativity at a whole new level. It is a sustainable fashion designer’s creativity when they are able to incorporate two different things to create something new. Using old garments to create new garments is much more popular and fashionable these days. Sustainable fashion is a very innovative step towards eco-fashion. Never forget to opt for upcycling as an option while attaining fashion sustainability.

These are some of the essential tips that are required to become a sustainable fashion designer. Sustainability is the only vital step left in order to create a healthy living in the environment. Being a sustainable fashion designer doesn’t only require a degree of a fashion course but also a mind of a thinker and believer of sustainability.

Do I Require to Have Prior Knowledge of Designing Before Joining the Jewellery Designing Course?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2021

To be honest, it might seem impossible for you to become a jewellery designer without having prior knowledge in the field of jewellery designing. You might think that to become a jewellery designer, you must have years of training experience and amazing art skills. But that’s not really the truth. In real life, starting your own jewellery line has never been easier than before. To have a head start in this jewellery line, you just need to be sure about some basic things. And then you would be good to go.

To begin your own jewellery line, all you need is the following:

  1. A unique idea: You must have a unique brand idea in order to start your own jewellery business. You have to be sure that no other brand has had a similar idea to yours. You have to be unique in your approach then only customers will get attracted towards your jewellery line.
  2. Basic business and marketing knowledge: You need to have some basic marketing and business knowledge. This is extremely essential in order to place your brand wisely in the market. You need to know some of the basic business and marketing tactics that lead your own jewellery line towards success.
  3. A small amount of money: You need to have a small amount of money in your hand in order to start your business. Money is required when you acquire multiple resources in order to set up your own jewellery brand. A small amount of startup capital gives surety of smoothness in work.

Believe it or not, these are the only three components you need to have in order to start your own Jewellery business. Though we don’t deny that drawing skills and product knowledge can be helpful but they aren’t a necessity obviously. You definitely don’t need to be a CAD software expert in order to give life to your designs. You can easily kickstart your jewellery business with all the three things stated above.

How Can I Possibly Start My Own Jewellery Line?

To be honest, the truth is that learning some complex CAD software takes years and people don’t really have the time to learn those skills as they also have to focus on handling the precious metals. Therefore, only the smart strategy works here. You need to partner with a production house and a 3-D designer in order to work these loopholes out. You can still be a jewellery designer by just knowing basic drawing skills and handling the business from over.

Though you can compromise on this, you really can’t afford not having knowledge about business and marketing as these are the major skills that run your business. You will also need to have strong communication skills in order to be able to communicate your business to outsiders effectively. You have to handle production, get your jewellery collection in stores, have a social media presence and develop PR. All of this can happen only when you are effective in your communication.

As we have stated above, although you can do things on your own, it’s not really required. Even if you don’t have any jewellery software, production skills or drawing skills, you can still be a jewellery designer for sure. The unspoken truth is that most of the famous Jewellery designers don’t really handcraft their own jewellery pieces. Especially after they have a successful running brand.

We know most of the people will now end up thinking that this would cost them a lot of money. But here’s how you are wrong and to know the reality, it’s absolutely not going to empty your pockets.

Will, it Cost Me a Lot of Money?

Not really, it won’t cost you a lot of money for sure. Compared to a lot of other businesses, like starting a tech company or starting a hotel, becoming a jewellery designer requires comparatively fewer investments of capital. It all depends on your choices of starting your business in a particular manner. If you are thinking of starting big, obviously it would require a lot of money but if you want to take baby steps that is also alright.

On the other hand, if you really want to spend less money while launching your collection, you can always opt for launching your collection online first. This will help your business flourish a lot more quickly than any other medium. Producing jewellery will obviously cost you money but starting your business online would relatively cost you less money and time. Also, you can have your jewellery pieces made in bulk only when you get an order. This practice will cut down on your expenses and make your business a lot less financially risky.

If you really don’t have the money to start even small, you can always end up starting a campaign to raise money for your business. This will help in gaining the audience’s interest in your jewellery business.

Now that you have actually figured out all the basics required for starting your jewellery business, now you can actually focus on getting started with it.

How to Actually Get Started with The Jewellery Business?

For the starters, even if you have some basic ideas or drawings regarding your designs in mind, you should start reaching out to a custom Jewellery studio for basic inquiry related to all of it. Inquire about the estimated costs of the various jewellery collections. You will even get to see detailed 3d models of your jewellery before the actual production of the jewellery designs starts.

The best part of starting like this is that the studio will take care of the whole process on their own. You just have to provide them with the ideas and then you are all set to go with your jewellery business. This means that you won’t have to spend your precious time thinking about all of it, the studio will be responsible to handle all of it.

All of this perfectly answers that you can be a jewellery designer even without having specific designing skills and trained experience in this jewellery designing field.

Learn the Nuances of Fashion Photography from JD Institute

Monday, January 11th, 2021

One of the most famous and highly competitive genres is fashion photography. Understanding the various aspects when it comes to fashion photography can give you an advantage in getting a hold of the field and impressing your clients through your images. Some of the styles with their nuances are as follows:

  • Catalog photography

Catalog photography forms one of the most simple styles when it comes to fashion photography. Its aim is to sell clothes due to which the main focus of the picture is on the clothes. Before progressing to the more complex styles or other styles of photography, this becomes a great place to start.

It is a type of product photography with an evident difference of model being in place while the focus still remains on the product which is clothes in this case. The background in such photos is kept plain, usually, such as white or grey, minimal accessories or few props are used; different poses are striked with emphasis on full clothing visible. The main focus of the photographer in this is on the lighting to capture even the minute details of the clothing due to which shooting with indoor lights or night shooting is avoided.

  • High fashion photography

High fashion photography is usually seen on the cover of magazines. But if the perspective of a photographer is seen, it refers to using supermodels or models which are well known in exaggerated poses or in poses we don’t usually see, with a wardrobe which is unrealistic and each element like location, hairstyle etc is chosen carefully so that it blends and creates a beautiful image.

But getting a flawless image is not a cakewalk as there are various challenges like choosing a location, perfect lighting, models etc.

Setting the mood of the photo is really significant along with right models or people with expertise have to be chosen so that they share the vision you have in mind and good equipment when it comes to the camera.

  • Street fashion photography

Street fashion or urban fashion photography is often considered as the opposite of high fashion photography as it looks more rugged when compared to high fashion photography. It contains clothes which people wear on a daily basis such as jeans, hoodies or shirts etc. photographers are keener in shooting everyday people in this type of photography than professional models. The main focus is on the lighting, expression of the people, how they are wearing their clothes. Long lens is used in this type of photography so that image can be captured from a distance and the person does not become conscious leading to the perfect image reflecting that some of the best trends when it comes to fashion is around you only.

  • Editorial fashion photography

Editorial fashion photography aims at depicting a story.  We often find these types of images in magazines or newspapers accompanied by texts and can be of different subjects. The goal in these types of photos is to create a mood that will reflect a story or may suggest an intriguing backstory. These images often include various styles of photographs such as closeup shots or shots which are captured from a distance for which different types of equipment is required along with different makeup items, different wardrobe and a variety of props. Because of the creativity, it allows the photographer, even after all the challenges this can be the most exciting and rewarding fashion photography.

While the list is not limited to these type of photography, this becomes an interesting field with neck to neck competition, due to which proper knowledge is required from the best institutions, such as JD institute of fashion technology which provides a diploma in photography or photography course in India in which the student is nurtured to conceive conceptualize and execute photoshoots, the correct usage of lighting will be taught along with mood, correct expression or emotion required for a perfect photoshoot, with in-depth knowledge around the camera etc. due to its unique style of teaching or quality service towards education it has been awarded international glory awards 2019, leaders in education award 2018, the times power icon award 2019, youth achiever of the year 2018 and so on.

What are Some Important Techniques for Jewellery Designing?

Friday, January 8th, 2021

Nowadays, women urge for better innovations and good quality in their lives. The same applies to the jewellery they want to wear. The Jewellery not only has to be of good quality but also has to have an innovative design. It even can showcase some exciting new effects that add more value to it looks. Not only this, jewellery should also be environment friendly and safe to wear. The one thing that holds the utmost importance in the jewellery business is innovative designs. Without innovative designs, one can lose their business.

Jewellery is always viewed as an artistic expression of a jewellery designer. A jewellery design is solely considered from an artistic vision. Technology and artistic innovation both fit into the representation of a jewellery design. How well do they fit together? What relationship do they hold? All of this would be certainly answered in this very discussion.

The link between design and technology:

There are various vital links between design and technology. The main being that the practical realisation of a design on jewellery requires the perfect understanding and use of technology. The use of technology is vital in both material and manufacturing processes. Second of all is the use of new technologies can open up new design opportunities for the use in jewellery making. Thirdly, the design demands require the use of improved technology. All of these pointers prove the vital link between design and technology.

Some Important Technologies for Jewellery Designing:

  1. Electroforming: Electroforming is a manufacturing process that involves the application of layers of precious or non-precious metals around a metal mandrel. Electroforming is a fast-growing manufacturing process mostly used in gold jewellery manufacturing. Though electroplating and electroforming are on similar lines still electroforming is more advanced technology than electroplating. Gold and its alloys are some of the best metals known for the process of electroforming. Major advantages of using the process of electroforming in the manufacturing of decorative gold objects is that the production of the thinner sections of a jewellery design that can’t be achieved with other methods can be easily achieved by the process of electroforming. In the process of electroforming, an electrolytic bath is used in order to deposit nickel or any kind of other electroformed metal onto a conductive surface of a model that is known as a mandrel. Once the deposited material has gained the desired thickness, the electroform is parted from the substrate. This process allows the replication of the mandrel surface texture with excellent process control.
  2. Cable making: Cable making is relatively a new process technology that involves spinning many wires together in a helical manner. A recent trend that supports this process is the use of gold cables for supporting pendants in neckwear instead of using gold chains. This is a bang on the opportunity for jewellery designers in order to break away from the conventional neckwear design philosophy. Here, the cable-making technology used in the jewellery industry has been adapted wisely from the electrical cable industry. One of the major aspects to think about is that the use of these different gold wires in cable-making offers interesting design options for jewellery making. This technology not only offers different design options but also creates designs with different surface texture.
  3. Knitting and Weaving: Another process technology that is extremely new to the jewellery business is the knitting of the precious metal wires in order to create knitted metal fabrics. Knitting and Weaving are on similar lines as of chain-making technology which is used to create fabrics. The knitting and weaving technologies can be used to knit precious metal wires into unique designs and patterns. The most important advantage of the process is that it can offer interesting design opportunities to the jewellery designer.
  4. Laser technology: Nowadays, laser technology is being used in jewellery production a lot. It is not only used for cutting and welding the jewellery but also used in decorating the jewellery by laser engraving. Laser engraving is a modern process for basically making custom and unique designs in jewellery. Laser technology can be used while engraving metal pieces or adding minute details to the jewellery. The smallest of unique details can be created with the help of a laser technology due to the precise working of the machinery. This technology opens up various interesting design options for not only individual jewellery pieces but also for mass production.
  5. Computer-aided design(CAD): With the growing demand of jewellery products, CAD has become one of the important parts of technology for many businesses. CAD proves to be one of the versatile technologies that help customers that have a varied taste in jewellery designing. Some want bold whereas some prefer delicate designs, CAD can help with all of this. Computer-aided design (CAD) has become one of the key features of jewellery designing and manufacturing. This type of technology helps to modify a design before it goes into its production stage. It can precisely generate 2D models, 3D models or technical illustrations of the jewellery designs. The major advantage of this kind of technology is that it not only reduces the amount of time it takes to create designs but it also allows for the production of different stages of a design. The technology helps in saving the time, resources, metals and gems of a jewellery designer. CAD allows the jewellery designer to create more intricate designs as the piece can be easily seen and edited now with the help of CAD technology. The jewellery designer would be open to customers input into the designs after the customer has seen the realistic images.

Jewellery is often a significant investment of a customer and the client has to be satisfied with the product they are buying. They will only be satisfied when the jewellery meets the expectations of a client. Therefore, a jewellery designer can take help of all these technologies in building unique designs for the jewellery that the customer finds approachable and perfect to wear.
