Budget-friendly Ways to Update Your Living Room

Monday, February 15th, 2021

As the name living room suggests, it is the area where we like to relax, get our entertainment from, start our morning with, etc. but while designing our living room the main obstacle which arises for most of us is how to be big on style and low on spending? JD Institute is here with some amazing tips or home interior design ideas to achieve the same

  • Rearrange the furniture

Before buying any new furniture always focus on rearranging the furniture you have. So instead of following a cliche layout like a coffee table in the middle, sofas against the wall and tv in the corner, why not try something out of the box like making a piece of art the focal point of your living room, pushing the sofas away from the wall or just decluttering the place etc

  • Shop for your own house for running within your budget

Before you buy new pieces on your tight budget, look around your house and see if you can borrow anything from other rooms or parts of the house which will look good in another area for example- a piece of furniture in your bedroom that is making it look cluttered and would look great in your living room

  • Make your walls scream beauty with the artwork

Instead of the usual pictures or photos, fabric wall hanging becomes a great cheap alternative for upgrading your blank white wall. If you possess any attractive bed cover, you might not require anything new. Macrame or the art of knotting strings in the pattern are making its comeback as well, you can DIY or modify it yourself to make it more appealing on your wall.

  • Add greenery with the help of house plants

To add to your design arsenal, plants are the easiest win as they add colour or shape to a place. You can find inexpensive house plants easily, larger house plants can still prove to be expensive in creating the illusion of the room filled with greenery due to which small plants should be arranged at different heights

  • Be aware of the power of paint

One of the best ideas for budget-friendly ways to update your living room is to don your DIY dungarees and get going with painting. There are a lot of great quality and low priced paint out there however you can buy a small pot and paint one wall for a pop of colour

  • Add removable wallpaper

For updating your living room, removable wallpapers can prove to be a game-changer. Now, you can buy your favourite design in wallpapers, add it to your living room and change or remove it after some years

  • Add a mural

Another great inexpensive idea is to include a mural in your living room. You can find innumerable large prints which will eliminate the need for spending ages pasting one to your wall or painting it yourself. Murals are a great method of upgrading your place especially if you are on rent as it is not as permanent as paint or wallpaper.

  • Create a gallery wall

Gallery walls have been a trend that has stood the test of time as it is the cheapest way to fill up a blank wall and give personality to the room which is much needed. You can use fabric cut-outs, photos, album cover, spare bits of wallpaper etc.

  • Update your cushions

Cushions form the most versatile component of furniture which is available in so many shapes, colours, sizes, textures. So new cushions can be the only need for refreshing your living room.

  • Layer up rugs

Rather than adopting an expensive approach of re-carpeting your living room, hide the stains like that of wine with layers of rugs.

From a young age, I have always been very artistic. Doing stuff in a regular manner was never my thing. Growing up, seeing my mother run a designer studio motivated me and I realized fashion designing is what I actually wanted to pursue. Scoring a good percentile in 12th did not influence my decision and I decided to take forward my interest. My focus was to pursue my passion and not fall into the generalized category of a normal mainstream career.

After doing my detailed research for best designing colleges, visiting the finest designing institutes, and a good understanding of curriculum and experiences offered at Institutes, I found JD institute the ideal place for me to be. Now, I am pursuing what interests me, that is design and styling at JD Institute of Fashion Technology. Here I am doing a graduation diploma in fashion designing in a helpful environment and with a super motivating staff of faculties. My journey at JD institute has been amazing so far. I am grateful to be a part of this institution. Nothing can ever stop you just as long as you are willing to work hard.

Elements of Designing Clothes

Sunday, February 14th, 2021

To create spectacular Garments and accessories, the leading fashion designers, manufacturers of garments,  textile experts, etc are all concerned about a bunch of common things year after year or season after season. These elements consume the thoughts or discussions etc of the fashion designers. Let’s take a deeper look at these fashion elements:

Colour

The first thing noticeable in the garment is the colour, the lightness or darkness/brightness or dullness used,  the proportion of the different colours used or the placement of colours. Colours are classified as warm or cool colours or black-and-white. The designers use these colours to create an illusion of light or size for example in dark colours we see an illusion of distance.

To enhance the look of the garment effective colour schemes are used.

Silhouettes

One of the most important elements of fashion designing is a silhouette. It refers to the basic shape, outline or styling of the clothing. some of the important dress silhouettes are:

  • Line silhouette
  • Straight column silhouette
  • Hourglass silhouette
  • Asymmetrical silhouette
  • Egg-shaped silhouette
  • Trapeze silhouette
  • Empire silhouette etc

Taste, occasion, size of the wearer and special effects etc are required or desired when designing the silhouette for a specific garment. The silhouette should give a finishing touch to the body of the wearer as well as be in sync with the period.

Fabric

To attain a Particular shape while designing, the type of fabric you choose is significant. Fabric texture refers to the feel of the fabric which includes its stiffness or softness or the appearance of the fabric. Other than the smooth appearance found in most fabrics, there are a variety of fabrics that possess a different texture such as crinkled, woven with raised patterns, etc

Fabric Prints and Patterns

The prints and patterns in the fabric while designing plays a really important role in deciding the look of it.

Body Shape

We all wish to look fashionable or wish to present ourselves in the best way everyone has a different body type but a certain categorisation is needed to successfully design fashion garments. Some of the most important body shapes are as per these categorisations- rectangle, triangle, inverted triangle, oval, Square, hourglass which is deemed to be the perfect body shape, etc

Balance and Rhythm

Balance and rhythm in fashion designing refer to symmetry or asymmetry with regards to shape, colour, style lines or elements. The designer focuses on designing the garment so that both sides of it appear to be the same or different,  a proportionate or appropriate combination of lines or shapes can lead to different rhythms.

Rhythm depicts the Pattern created with the help of lines or shapes for example how the synchronised embroidery design is made around the neckline.

Emphasize

This refers to emphasising an element of the design to denote greater attention to something- it is usually a break in the rhythm of the garment.

For example studded collar in a denim jacket, etc

Design Lines

It depicts the lines seen in the garment which separates its shape like waistline, hemline, etc. For the composition of the garment, lines and their correct placement is very important. Two types of design lines are commonly seen- straight lines and curved lines. Straight lines are the lines that are placed horizontally, vertically and even diagonally, while a curved line can be a bit curved or slightly spherical.

Diagonal lines are often used to create an asymmetry which is in fashion these days.

Dress Details and Decorative Designs

To enhance the look of the garment decoration and detailing should be given emphasis such as strategically placed fabric patterns, frills, ruffles, etc. while the decorative designs Include embroidery, fringes, etc. These decorative designs or dress details should be added according to the type of fabric or simplicity and complexity of the garment, etc

Unity and Proportion

The relationship between various components of a garment along with the size or scale of the garment about the wearer is known as proportion. While unity is the factor that combines proportion, balance, rhythm, etc and enhances the look of the whole product

Design Techniques for Lower Environmental Impact

Thursday, February 11th, 2021

Sustainable design focuses on reducing the negative impact on the environment seen in conventional design methods by reducing the usage of non-renewable resources or minimizing waste. Let’s take a look at the various techniques, processes or strategies in designing products to have a low environmental impact:

  • Zero-waste Pattern Cutting

Zero waste reflects a technique in which textile waste is eliminated at the stage of designing. According to an estimate, around 15-20% of the textiles which are intended for clothing ends up on the cutting floor. The approach of zero waste can be obtained by knowing the exact dimensions for sourcing your textile. You can work out the pattern with the help of draping as well.

  • Minimum Seam Construction

This technique focuses on reducing the number of seams that are required to sew a garment together. It helps in making the manufacturing process much faster and in saving materials. It allows the garment to have much greater freedom of movement and more comfort for the person wearing it.

  • Upcycling

Upcycling as the name suggests is a technique in which by-products or disguised materials are made into something new or are recycled into something of better quality or value. Recycling the existing materials helps to save energy, water, chemicals or other sources which are required to make new materials.

You can use deadstock fabric, vintage clothing which you repurpose etc in case of fashion. However, finding factories that deal with upcycling work can be a bit challenging.

  • Design for Disassembly

In this technique, each product is designed in such a way that once the life of the product ends it can easily be taken apart to recycle the materials or reuse them. This implies that the product will be easier to assemble or will contain fewer materials, cutting the cost of it and saving the product’s environmental footprint which makes it a smart design.

  • Transformational

Transformational strategy refers to designing products for multiple usages. In fashion, multi-functional garments are often seen such as reversible jacket or garments that can be worn in different ways

  • Design Reflecting Longevity

This may sound like a common approach however even the smallest choices can change the direction of how long a product will last. There are numerous reasons due to which people discard their clothing such as fitting issues, fabric quality etc. The best approach you can take is to design products that last longer or can be reused/passed on to another.

  • Craft Preservation

Old or ancestral techniques can be preserved by including them in modern techniques i.e preservation through innovation. For example- using special traditional embroidery creatively etc.

The fashion industry encompasses designing, manufacturing, distribution, marketing, retailing, etc, and is one of the biggest industries with the neck-to-neck competition, however, if you possess the passion for it, you can make it big by just applying your creativity in unique ways. The first step towards a successful career in fashion designing is learning or Education from the best fashion designing colleges such as JD Institute Of Fashion Technology (which is one of the oldest premium institution in India or reflects a legacy of 30 years with an ambition of setting up a commanding association of students to turn their ideas or dreams into a reality) which is dedicated specially for the studying of art and design spectrum providing fashion designing course etc with each course being industry-based providing the necessary skills, exposure, and making them ready for the tough competition in the real world in reasonable fashion designer course fees as it shares the vision of providing the latest resources, technology, infrastructure etc so that no external barrier can stop them from making it big in their fields or so that they can stand shoulder to shoulder with the top layer of designers etc. due to their exemplary contribution to education, JD Institute has been granted with numerous token of admiration such as the times power icon award, international glory award, head in education award, best skill learning for fashion design in India at the Indian Education awards and many more. What Skills Make You Unique in The Fashion Designing Field

Wednesday, February 10th, 2021

Fashion designing refers to the art of beautifying clothes with unique clothes construction, designs and accessories. It is believed to be started around the 19th century with Charles Frederick Worth who was the first designer ever to have his name sewn on the garment. Over the years many different styles have come up with the fashion industry growing every day making it one of the biggest industries with neck to neck competition. What are the skills that are required that can make you unique or can you make you stand out from the crowd in this Industry? We’ve got you covered.

Creativity

The foremost skill which is required is creativity, now let’s focus upon what creativity really means? Creativity refers to the rt of taking anything and converting into a mesmerizing piece of art. Have an Eye to Make Everything Better

Another important skill which is required is to have an eye that looks at anything and visualises how to make it better. For example- when we go shopping and see a t-shirt etc we think of what will look good with it or what combination will look perfect with it, that is the job of a stylist and people often confuse stylist with designers, a designer, on the other hand, works on creating that very garment better with its designs etc

Have an Eye for Fit on the Body

You should have an eye as to how a garment should fit on as a person be it, man or woman. You should be able to make out if even a quarter inch is off from the fitting which will help you a lot in being a good designer.

Have a Talent for Colour and Style

The word “talent” is especially used as these two things are not that easy to learn. It is something that every designer should possess for example- you should be able to say this colour is too red or too blue or how the colours should be tweaked so that it looks better, and this comes with experience so make sure you have as much practical experience as possible.

Display Stamina and Determination

No matter if you are working for yourself or for a company, working for long hours of 16-17 hours straight is normal in this industry and it never ends, if yoy don’t possess the passion or determination towards it, you will become irritated which will reflect in the quality of work that you do

Problem-Solving Skills

This field requires quick actions on situations like when the fabric you wanted didn’t come on time or something came up that is a matter of urgency etc, you need to display out of the box thinking or creativeness to maintain that reputation or to be successful in this career

Ability to Multitask

To become a good fashion designer, you need to be great at multitasking for example- most of the fashion designers work on around 5 seasons together such as approving fall production strike off, sourcing fabric for the spring line etc

Ability to Work Well with Others

As a fashion designer, you will need a lot of people to work in the process due to which you should possess the ability to work well with others for the smooth functioning of the process or for delivering what you promised etc

Detach Your Emotions

This is another important skill, as it is really important to detach your emotions as there might be something that you like but the customer doesn’t so make sure you fulfill the vision of the customer or the person you are designing for
