The Importance of Construction Supervision in Site Safety

Thursday, July 8th, 2021

The construction industry has traditionally been an accident-prone one, and security issues are a significant concern. Frequently occurring construction safety accidents not only cause heavy casualties, a delay in the construction process, and economic losses, but they also cause great suffering to the victims and their families, take a toll on the industry and the reputation of the government, as well as create massive indirect and direct costs. Consequently, construction safety has drawn attention from a wide range of people. Both academia and industry are focused on improving the safety performance of the construction industry. To cut down on construction accidents, both experts in relevant research fields and managers in the construction field place great emphasis on the safety supervision of builders.

At JD Institute of interior design, we offer a depth of exploring interior decorating and site supervision.

The Responsibilities of a Construction Supervisor

Construction supervisors are responsible for looking at all activities on the worksite and supervising the contractors and other staff on the field. In addition to travelling from site to site, he enforces legal regulations and standards to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. In the course of the construction process, the supervisor deals with any problems or obstacles.

Construction supervisors are responsible for the following tasks:

  •  It is essential to monitor the construction process and provide training and team-building sessions to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Perform routine site inspections and inspections of equipment, materials, and construction sites
  • It is maintaining awareness of safety codes and advancements in construction.
  • Recruiting and training new employees
  • Looking after the paperwork of multiple projects and visiting sites
  • They assure compliance with technical standards and rules regarding occupational health and safety on construction sites.
  • Applicable Safety Plan items are applied correctly and adequately for the worksite.
  • Ensure that the employees are trained on appropriate work practices and provide technical guidance for accident prevention.
  • When an accident occurs on the construction site, the construction supervisor must report to the authorities according to the emergency plan. The supervisor’s responsibility is to administer first aid to the injured people and ensure no further damages happen to the employees or the property. Additionally, he must keep the accident site intact.
  • The supervisor must keep a record of all accidents.

Benefits of Having a Construction Supervisor

Monitoring the staff and the facilities is essential for ensuring their quality. The likelihood of employees making mistakes increases without proper supervision. Even a tiny mistake can result in something disastrous in construction sites. Research has shown that most construction site accidents occur because of a lack of leadership.

  • Legal requirement

Apart from looking after the safety of the construction site, a supervisor also takes care of the legal aspects. Some various statutory provisions and acts determine the number of personnel to supervise and other requirements for supervision. Furthermore, these regulations specify the protocols and safety procedures, as well as the number of supervisors.

  • The degree of supervision required.

The supervision requirements on a construction site may differ significantly. Each

In the contract, there are specific terms regarding supervision protocols to be followed. If feasible, perform a risk assessment to determine the number of supervisors and degree of standards needed. Depending on the site and work to be done, some sections may require more supervision than others. For instance, high-risk areas need more care, and inexperienced workers require more upkeep than experienced ones.

  • Increase the productivity

Would you like to work as an interior designer? Here’s the amount of money you’ll make

There has been an ever-increasing demand for interior designers all over the world for quite a few years. The more people migrate to urban areas and expose themselves to exotic destinations, the more they invest in their living spaces. Thus, it explains why interior designers are in such high demand and why this trend has peaked in the last few years. Despite this, the shift from joint to nuclear families caused by overpopulation and a change in the family structure has resulted in continued declines in inland consumption. Hence, people urgently need to think of how to use the limited living spaces efficiently and effectively. Due to all of these, interior designing has now become a billion-dollar industry in India alone this year. Since interior designing is booming like never before, we at JD Institute understand the increasing need to train young persons in this field. Being one of the top institutes in India for fashion and interior designing, we aim to prepare students for every type of project they may get.

What is the difference between an interior designer and a decorator?

People generally tend to get confused between an interior decorator and an interior designer and think they are interchangeable terms. Let us break down both the words so you can understand them better. Anyone can be an interior decorator if they have a suitable skill set and a creative mind. For example, a person who likes to experiment and innovate designs with colours, textiles and fabrics can become a freelance interior decorator. One only has to print a professional card and promote themselves to clients to get interior decorating projects.

On the other hand, an interior designer is a person who has specialized in interior design. To be an interior designer, you need to have educational qualifications in this field. A bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement for working in the field of interior designing. Thus, depending on what your goal is to become, you must pursue the necessary education.

Specializations to Become an Interior Designer

The umbrella term “Interior designing” generally refers to studying, planning, and designing living or professional spaces. Yet, just like in any other field, there are several sectors in interior designing, and you could choose to work in any of them. Career opportunities in this field include exhibition designers, lighting designers, furniture designers, architectural technologists, architects, kitchen designers, production designers, textile designers, and stylists.

Skills You Need to Become an Interior Designer

Now that you know the several career opportunities in interior designing, you must understand what it takes to become an interior designer in any of these sectors besides your educational qualifications.

  • Communication skills: If your goal is to become a successful designer, you must first be educated thoroughly in the field of interior designing and also be an all-rounder in this field. Besides all the technical skills you will require in this field, you must develop good interpersonal and communication skills. These skills are essential for maintaining a good network and relationship with suppliers, contractors and most importantly, clients. Plus, you must also have the brains to market your designs well so that people do not lose interest in your business and the quality of your service does not fall short of excellence.
  • The knack for designing effectively: This goes without saying, but to be a great interior designer, you must have an innate ability to adapt the best designs to the location in which you are working. The knack for appropriate compositions, colour, textiles, arrangements, and architecture makes a good interior designer the best. Moreover, the gift for these things ensures that you, as an interior designer, can get the best projects in the market and work with the best architects, builders, business owners, and government agencies.
  • Detailed knowledge and information: There is a reason why interior designers need specific educational qualifications to get into this field. With education, you learn all about the details of this field and of working on different projects. Without this knowledge, you could even be out of a job. Having in-depth knowledge about all the things you are working on is quintessential for every interior designer who wants to be the best in their field. You might find that some details like plumbing codes, load-bearing walls and electricity are boring, but these are necessary when you start working as an interior designer. Plus, this intricate knowledge gives an edge to interior designers over interior decorators as they are not specialized enough in this field.
  • Keeping up with trends: The industry or business of interior designing is a competitive one. Thus, it is crucial that, as an interior designer, you keep up with the trends and all the demands of people at any particular time. Keeping up with the trends in your field would help you gain an advantage in the competition, and you can do multiple types of projects without hesitation. You could keep yourself updated by reading different design websites and publications, following a mentor and communicating with fellow designers.

Salary and Payscale of Interior Designers

Your salary as an interior designer depends on a lot of factors. These factors include your experience in the field and the number of years you have worked as a designer. Apart from that, your salary also depends on the location and company where you work. If you have just started in this field, you could expect an average annual salary of 4 lakh. This amount increases with experience. Thus, as a senior-level interior designer, you could be earning 30 lakh per annum on average. Besides the factors mentioned above, you must remember that your work would determine how much you get paid. So, ensure that your employer is impressed with your work and experience in this field.

Conclusion

At JD Institute, we don’t believe in the “One size fits all” mentality and thus work to hone each person’s unique skill set. As a result, all our students get the best possible training to excel in their fields. Furthermore, being the leading institute in fashion and interior designing, specializing in interior designing here, would ensure that you reach the zenith of success anywhere you work.

What Is An Interior Designer’s Annual Income?

Friday, July 2nd, 2021

Imagine you bought a new house or apartment which was quite well-furnished and comfortable. Yet, somehow it does not feel like your own place, and you keep feeling that something is missing. In those times, you might not be able to decipher what’s wrong, but we can. Therefore, it is necessary to hire an interior designer who can customize your living spaces and give your suggestions on organization and home decor, among other things, to make the house your home. JD Institute of Fashion Technology has been one of India’s most trusted education institutes for fashion and interior designing. We train each person in a way that fits their unique skills so they can succeed in the field of interior designing or fashion.

When it comes to interior design, the primary task of an interior designer is to make living spaces safe, functional and beautiful. To do this, they determine how much space they are working on and make adjustments to it. It is important to note that “interior designer” is an umbrella term, just like engineer and doctor. Therefore, there are many kinds of interior designers who specialize in different sectors of this field. While some interior designers work in architectural or engineering industries, some are into specialized design services. Like any other field, this field has many sectors and depending on the industry you work in, your pay scale varies. This article will get to know more about the work interior designers do and how they get paid for it.

Interior Designers Jobs and their Duties

As we mentioned before, interior designers make your house feel like home by making it comfortable, functional and beautiful. We also said that they need to measure the space requirements before making changes to your living space. These are determined by looking at the blueprints of your house, and to work, they must know inspection regulations and building codes, as well as universal accessibility standards. They also select decorative items for your homes, such as the colour of the walls, lighting and other such aspects.

Duties and Responsibilities of Interior Designers

The general work that interior designers do are the following-

  • They keep searching for and bidding on new projects.
  • Their job is to determine how to utilize the available space best while still making it beautiful and functional.
  • They sketch out preliminary design plans, which also include partition and electrical layouts.
  • They understand the client’s requirements and goals for each project and work accordingly.
  • They decide on all the specific materials and furnishings used in the living spaces, such as flooring, wall finishes, lighting, plumbing fixtures and furniture.
  • They create an accurate timeline for the whole project and also figure out the expenses.
  • Their responsibilities include ordering raw materials and overseeing the installation of design elements.
  • They are in charge to supervise all construction work, and they also coordinate with general building contractors to execute the plans for each project.
  • In the end, they ensure that the client is satisfied by checking the job site.

Types of Interior Designers

We mentioned before that there are many types of interior designers, just like in any other field. However, the following are a few examples of the types of interior designers one can be.

  1. Universal designers: This type of designer can renovate all spaces to make them more functional and accessible. Generally, adaptable designers are called upon to renovate areas where the elderly and people with special needs live. But universal designers are, of course, fully qualified to work on all kinds of spaces.
  2. Healthcare designers: These designers use design processes based on tried and tested methods and solid evidence. That is necessary because they renovate clinics, healthcare centres, doctors; offices, residential care facilities and hospitals. To design such spaces designed to aid residents, patients, and medical facilities, these designers conduct thorough research.
  3. Corporate designers: As can be understood from the name, corporate designers specialize in renovating professional spaces which range from small office buildings to large corporations in skyscrapers. Their main task is to make the professional spaces functional, efficient and best for employees. They could also use specific design elements which represent the company.
  4. Kitchen and bath designers: As the name implies, these designers generally specialize in bathrooms and kitchen spaces. They have high domain knowledge of all the varieties of fixtures, cabinets, plumbing, appliances and electrical solutions for bathroom and kitchen spaces.
  5. Sustainable designers: These designers mainly use strategies to improve water and energy efficiencies and improve indoor air quality. As the name suggests, sustainable designers try to make spaces more functional and sustainable. Thus, they mainly use products that are not harmful to the environment, like cork or bamboo for flooring. In the USA, sustainable designers can apply for certification like the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design from the Green Building Council. This certificate shows that the designer is fully qualified to design spaces and buildings in a sustainable way.

Annual Income of Interior Designers

If you have just started interior designing in India, you can expect an average 4 lakh per annum salary. Like with every field, your pay increases with years of experience. Similarly, a senior interior designer could expect an annual salary of 30 lakh. Your pay scale depends not only on your work experience but also on many other factors like location, education, the company you are working in, and its size. Besides that, you will need to win over the favour of your employer by showing your skillset and practical experience in this field. In the world, the exceptionally annual salary of an interior designer is around $57,060. The lowest an interior design earned annually would range around $33,020, and the highest would be more than $97 920. These figures also depend on the type of interior designer you are, that is, the interior designing sector in which you have a specialization. Besides that, interior designers have to tweak their schedules to meet the requirements of their clients and their deadlines.

Conclusion

In India, the overall worth of interior design is growing every day and is at its peak this year. It is now a multimillion-dollar industry, and demand for interior designers is at its peak too. That is the factor that JD institute understands and thus, trains all its candidates according to the skill set. Therefore, if you are interested in upskilling yourself in interior designing and understanding this industry like no other, JD institute is the place for you.

What are Gemstone Doping Techniques, and How Do They Work?

Monday, June 28th, 2021

A good jewellery design course will teach aspirants about various techniques related to gemstones. One of the most interesting facets of workmanship, which goes hand in hand with jewellery designing, is Gemstone Doping. There are applicable doping techniques that span two key branches of lapidary arts. With regard to gemstone faceting, there will be a dropped stick positioned within a machine, enabling precisely controlling rotation, angles and cut depth alike. Doping for the purpose of cabochon cutting is a simpler affair and does not require as much precision. For instance, suppose the adhesive bond breaks off while a cab is being cut. In this case, it may be super-glued back into the dop stick and function again within a matter of minutes.

Yet, if a stone comes right off the adhesive upon the dop at the time of faceting, it will be a different affair altogether. You will either have to ensure reapplication of the stone towards the drop with the same orientation as earlier (almost impossible to achieve), or you will have to re-cut your stone to a whole new level of orientation. Gem cutters will have to master these doping-related techniques quickly for efficiently faceting gemstones.

Doping Techniques and Steps for Cabochon Cutting

The commonest doping technique will require dowels in diverse sizes and wax as the predominant doping compound. Dopping wax is quite similar to regular sealing wax although it is mixed sometimes with various other ingredients. A dop station or alcohol lamp is needed along with dop sticks. Here are some aspects that you should keep in mind about the process.

  • You will first have to get the dop warm enough.
  • If you have a dop station, then the procedure will not be as difficult.
  • Put a little dop wax on the dop station and put it on.
  • Wait until the wax melts fully, and you will be ready to start.
  • If you have an alcohol lamp, you will have to put extra care into the process.
  • You should start lighting the alcohol lamp first and then putting the dropped wax roughly one inch over the flame.
  • You should slowly melt dop wax without getting it burned.
  • If you get it overtly hot, it will start either smoking or bubbling.
  • You should then start putting hot wax on the dop stick. The whole end of the stick should be wax-coated for creating a mound.
  • Work your wax upwards alongside your dop stick to give it more strength and stability.
  • Turn the stick in your own hands if the wax starts running or dripping.
  • Keep coating your dop stick till you get ample wax in place.
  • After applying wax to the dop stick, you can fasten the stone to the same.
  • Heat the dop wax slowly till it gets runny.
  • Prior to dripping, put the gemstone into the wax.
  • You should aim for a tighter seal in this case.
  • Upon pushing it in, hold the same over an alcohol lamp till the wax slumps or glazes over.
  • Turn the stone slowly and watch how the wax seals the gemstone’s edges.
  • After extensive sealing of the wax around gemstones, you may let the wax cool down within 20-30 seconds approximately. Test for ensuring that you get a solid link between the dop stick and gemstone.
  • This can be done by gently tugging at your gemstone. Testing is recommended at this stage rather than finding issues when you are cutting.
  • If you can lightly tug the stone without it totally coming off, then you can get ready for the cabbing procedure.
  • Dropping the cabochon prior to cutting may be vital for obtaining a product of premier quality. Cabbing the gemstone by hand will be a tougher process, and it is tougher to find a domed or neat cabochon. Dop gemstones whenever possible.

Some prefer using epoxy with another method. This includes supplies like a dop stick, two-part epoxy and so on. This is a simple method where you will fuse the two-part epoxy as per the bottle guidelines. You will have to generously apply the epoxy to the dop stick and centre the same on the gemstone. This system makes it easier to move your dop stick around while keeping it centred since you will have a few minutes prior to setting up. The curing procedure is expected to get over within just five minutes. Yet, you may have to pause for half an hour before faceting the gemstone. Centering the drop is vital for gemstones that are comparatively smaller and more expensive.

Removal of the Gemstone

If you wish to get the gemstone gently removed from your dop stick, you will have to keep it within the freezer. Wait for about 5-10 minutes before you take it out again. After this, tug nicely on the gemstone in your hand, ideally with a towel or carpet under it, to prevent any slips. The stone is expected to pop off after staying in the freezer for some time. If you have any wax leftover on the gemstone, pick it off if you can or put your gemstone right into some acetone. This will dissolve the wax in a few minutes without any hassles.

In this unpredictable life, precaution is better than cure, self-defense is not only about physical activity but also prepares an individual for all the unexpected challenges life can throw at them. By mastering some very basic techniques one can prepare for dangerous and unforeseen circumstances.

Keep practicing and learning, do not wait for tomorrow because the time is now.

Information About the Value, Price and Jewellery of Stibiotantalite

Thursday, June 24th, 2021

Stibiotantalite is often a subject of speculation in the world of jewellery designing. Stibiotantalite is a precious mineral comprising oxygen, tantalum, antimony and niobium. However, if niobium content surpasses tantalum-based content, the mineral will be named stibiocolumbite. It appears medium-hard, translucent to transparent and yellow-to-dark-brown or even greenish/reddish brown with a luster that is akin to adamantine. Stibiotantalite is found in the walls and veins linked with tin mines. This is a mineral that is rare and owing to its comparative softness, it is likely to be discovered in mineral collections rather than jewellery.

Many people will learn from their jewellery design course that rare stibiotantalite comes with a fascinating mixture of optical and physical attributes which help in differentiating it from other gemstones of the earth-toned variety. At the same time, cut pieces more than 2-3 carats will find a place amongst the rarest gems for collectors.

Here are some key details of Stibiotantalite:

  • Formula- Sb(Ta, Nb) O4
  • Antimony (Sb) and Tantalum (Ta) make up their composition.
  • It occurs in granite pegmatites, more often in crystals of good quality.
  • Colours vary from dark brown to lighter and yellowish-brown, yellowish grey, reddish-yellow, greenish, reddish-brown and yellow. It is often zoned.
  • Fracture- Subconchoidal.
  • Hardness- 5-5.5.
  • Distinct 1 Direction Cleavage.
  • Crystallography- Orthorhombic, striated, crystals prismatic, often twinned, massive.
  • Refractive Index-2.37-2.46.
  • Birefringence- 0.090.
  • Dispersion- 0.146.
  • Zero Luminescence.
  • Absorption Spectrum- Non-diagnostic, may display didymium lines.
  • Optics- a = 2.37; β = 2.40; γ = 2.46. Biaxial (+), 2V=75°.
  • Optic Sign- Biaxial+.
  • Luster- Vitreous-resinous.
  • Specific Gravity- 7.34-7.46.
  • Transparency- Translucent-transparent.

Learning More About Stibiotantalite

Stibiotantalite is a part of the cervantite group of minerals and will form a series by including stibiocolumbite. The latter will result if Nb (niobium) surpasses Ta (tantalum). Stibiotantalite happens whenever the opposite takes place, i.e. when tantalite surpasses niobium. Stibiotantalite may be easily differentiated from other gems which are comparable. Yet, cut specimens largely resemble sphalerites that are commonly seen. These gems usually share a wider range of colours with earthy tones including yellow, brown, green and red tinges. Both may also be transparent and possess dispersion which surpasses diamond’s fire. This may also be quite high, going over the RI (refractive index). They also share properties of a pyroelectric nature that may leave behind yellowish streaks.

There are some differences that still remain. Stibiotantalite usually has more hardness while sphalerites that are polished, will have more adamantine luster as compared to the former. Stibiotantalites have an appearance that varies between resinous and vitreous. Stibiotantalite comes with stronger birefringence while sphalerites do not have any. The birefringence will lend a sleepier appearance to the cut stibiotantalite owing to back facets doubling. Stibiotantalite usually has higher SG or specific gravity figures, ranging between 7.34-7.46 as compared to sphalerites. This is true for most other kinds of gemstones as well. Hence, if you come across a denser, pyroelectric, transparent and attractive gem that is earth-toned and birefringent, you will be assured of getting an extremely rare variety of stibiotantalite. Stibiotantalite is already synthesized although known jewellery uses are few in number. Enhancements also remain largely unknown.

Discovering Stibiotantalite

  • Mozambique is known for producing the highest volume of stibiotantalite although the source may be near exhaustion in the future.
  • Other sources of such crystals include the United States (Topsham, California, San Diego County and Maine) and Brazil.
  • Western Australia’s Wodgina district churns out gem materials in the form of rolled pebbles as well.
  • Some other sources include Myanmar, Afghanistan, Russia, Kola Peninsula, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Zimbabwe and Varutrask.

Sizes of Stones

Stibiotantalites are mostly rare and cut stones exceeding 10 carats are mostly unknown. Facetable and transparent specimens are also on the rarer side. Sizes usually vary between 4.65 and 7.3.

Care Instructions for Stibiotantalite Jewels

Caring for this type of jewellery demands specific instructions and guidelines. You are likely to discover a higher proportion of faceted stibiotantalite within modern gem collections as compared to mainstream jewellery lineups. The 5-5.5 hardness threshold makes them more vulnerable to regular wear and tear along with scratches. They should be kept aside for special occasions and parties and kept in secure environments, separately stored from other jewellery items. Owing to inclusions within them, you should refrain from any cleaning in a mechanical way. You should rather look to use a milder detergent and warm water along with a softer brush. Always consult an expert before going ahead with the cleaning process yourself.

Identification of Stibiotantalite

Stibiotantalite comes in several colours including greenish-yellow, brown, light yellow-brown, yellow and dark brown among others. It has fractures of a brittle nature, generating conchoidal and smaller fragments as well. The mineral has a non-magnetic type and is also non-fluorescent by way of its attributes. It has the ideal cleavage along with a light-yellowish streak and exclusive adamantine luster in tandem with an appearance varying between transparent and translucent. The average stibiotantalite density ranges between 6 and 7.4 while hardness remains at 5.5. If you are looking for reputed and highly educational jewellery design courses along with reasonable jewellery designing course fees, then you can take a look at JD Institute. The creative side has always driven me to itself. Colors, Shapes, Spaces always gave a sense of relief and blank canvas I can paint and repaint. Once it was time for me to join college, I knew this vast scope of creativity was going to confuse me as I knew I wanted to learn more than one thing. While exploring, I learned about JD Institute of Fashion Technology and the TFA that takes place every year. I knew this was the place where I wanted to be. As I was more attracted to interiors I decided to opt for it. However, I knew this wasn’t the only thing I was opting for… The Fashion, Dance, and Music society of JD Institute welcomed me with open arms on the basis of my interests. The faculty here pushed me forward in their college shoots as they saw a caliber for modeling in me and I was also very much interested. Today I am living it up every day to fulfill my dreams not only to become an Interior Designer but also a Renowned Model by choosing Modelling as a career option and giving my time and focus to it. Not many have the courage to do so but JD taught me to be the most beautiful version of myself. And as Emma Stone says and I quote “ I can’t think of any better representation of beauty than someone who is unafraid to be herself “ I am ready and thankful to JD for guiding me. Let’s Rise and Shine.

What to Look for When Choosing Polished Jewellery

Saturday, June 12th, 2021

Buying jewellery is a process that comes with more intricacies than you normally assume. While a jewellery design course from a reputed institution will help you understand several facets of the same, you do need guidance while choosing polished jewellery. Custom-made jewellery designing is usually an expensive affair as far as the final product is concerned. Detailing is the key, along with finishing. For pieces that are not as costly, detailing may require more time than what would normally justify the labour involved. Some jewellers may not always invest the same time and energy into finishing pieces. Some cast settings may come with rough surfaces that require immediate smoothening. High polish will never be attainable in such cases without buffing.  This is a common affair since shortcuts are often taken while creating jewellery pieces.

If you are buying jewellery, it is imperative that you carefully examine the polish factor, checking the surface minutely for gauging its levels of smoothness. Polished finishes are made with the use of specialized compounds for polishing and fast-spinning brushes that smoothen out the surface of the gold. A brushed/satin-made finish is made by brushing a fine grit surface in a direction that goes against the grain. Frost finishing styles, in contrast, go deeper against the gold in each direction.

While jewellery designing focuses on style, functionality and form, several creators view polishing as a repetitive and time-consuming process. However, it is one of the most important aspects of the whole procedure of creating/repairing jewellery pieces. The final appearance is what counts in this case, and although proper polishing may help in covering up sloppy craftsmanship, poor quality of polishing will make expert craftsmanship appear flimsy. As your jewellery design course will teach you, polishing and buffing are the two most important procedures for creating that eventual high luster impact for jewellery pieces.

Learning More About Jewellery Polishing

Buffing is an abrasive method where a smaller portion of the surface gets removed with the help of the Tripoli compound. It helps in the removal of small sanding scratches and smoothening out the surfaces, although this will not be a brighter polish. The higher luster is accomplished through careful polishing, which makes use of rouge among other compounds of a harder nature. Several rouge types are present for varying usage, and they can be differentiated on the basis of colour. Yellow rouge is one of the chosen picks for gold since it is not as messy as conventional red rouge. Rouge helps in metal burnishing, shifting surface layers for smoothening out finer buffing scratches.

Experts advise not mixing the Tripoli and rouge buffs since they may lead to contamination of the latter. This will lead to an improper finish and ensure that jewellery is wiped or washed off after using the former. Jewellery should never be elevated over the horizontal line, even while using the motor spindle. Similarly, it should never be overtly lowered. Working a little below the buff wheel center is advisable in this case. Work should be firmly pressed against the buff wheel in order to feel the cutting process taking place suitably. Extra pressure, however, will not result in a superior polish or finish. Lighter pressure will not work as well. Hence, firm and balanced pressure is the need of the hour.

Things to Remember while Buffing

The buff wheels should not be overloaded with excessive rouge or Tripoli compounds. It is not always required that you apply a higher amount of compounds while using the buff method. Apply compounds only when they are required. The buff rotation threshold is 57 t/, times of a second at 3450 rpm (regular polishing motor speeds). This indicates that 57 compound layers are being put on the wheel for each second that you are holding the Tripoli or rouge bar against your spinning wheel.

The jewellery should be continually moved, and holding it for a longer duration in a single position may lead to non-desired grooves being cut into the metal. The extra cutting may also lead to the removal of detailing and shape changes. The jewellery should be neatly pressed against the spinning wheel before being moved in a downward direction. Then move it sideways, roll it, rotate the same and place it to ensure that the wheel touches all metal areas. They will be uniformly polished as a result, and cross buffing will lead to higher shine too.

Buff through all solder joints rather than the actual joint itself. Solder will normally be softer as compared to surrounding metals. In case you are buffing with the joint, then the polishing will be faster for the solder, leaving behind a metal groove in its place. Jewellery should be firmly held, and fingers should never be interlocked into the same. A ring should never be put on the finger for polishing purposes. For a more professional finish and appearance, the flex-shaft is a good starting point. It has smaller brushes and wheels, enabling easy polishing of delicate zones and prongs without any minute damages. It will help in reaching more inaccessible zones with bigger wheels. Hence, buffing and polishing on a bigger machine will help in a smoother and higher luster. These are some basics that aspiring designers should keep in mind.
